We owe to you, your Excellency, the key to success here at our college and home. You have opened the doors of nity, by reminding us that we are all one with Our Lord in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, pirit, by inaugurating some of our most beautiful University traditions and by establishing the criteria of our social activities, and, edication, by your own example of devotion towards the lasting benefits of Christian education. While Unity, Spirit, and Dedication have only recently been our themes they have constantly been the force behind your work here. Meeting roommates, unpacking, navigating between trunk room and residence hall without get- ting lost, ferreting out car pool companions from lounge and library, discovering both Big Sisters and Big Brothers, beach parties, and mixers were all part of the colorful mosaic of Freshman Week. But the newness soon wore off and the freshmen began to settle down into the routine of daily college life. Perhaps it was distressing, at first, to find one- self no longer the pampered baby of the college, but it was more heartening, at Freshman Follies time, to realize that this class was already an integral part of the Student Body. They "belonged.', Then, it was time to get to know themselves better. The relaxed air at the Class Party, at Sandra D'Agos- tino's was a unifying spirit. They had worked togeth- er for the Follies and had become better acquainted, 44 but here they could meet without the stress and strain of rehearsals and deadlines and merely enjoy each other's company. This class, more or less quiet since the Follies, now showed yet another facet of its abilities. Their two "Friday nightersn, one featuring a pinata, the other -stirring renditions of Christmas Carols, proved very successful, as did their Christmas Toy Drive and doll raffle, a benefit for the mission on Formosa. Their first college retreat, marking the end of finals and first semester, gave these Freshmen time to think, time to fit in place all the pieces of the confusing puzzle that was their first semester in college. It also provided time to look forward towards February and the Supper Dance, coordinated by social chair- men Colleen O'Brien and Karen Graham. Ahead was an even better second semester, under the able leader- ship of newly elected class OFICICCIS, Nancy Cain, pres- identg Ave DeVanon, vice-president, Anne Jurika, secretary, Claudia Downs, treasurer. Class officers elected the preceeding spring - Anne Boehler, president, Joni Karpinski, vice- president, Patti Murphy, secretary, and Ruth Wickersham, treasurer - and social chair- men Maureen Pecht and Vivian Magnus, worked together with class counselor Mother Patch in guiding a happy and successful year. The year's activities were begun with helping "little sisters" get orientated. The morale lifting was continued throughout the year by such boosters as the buddy system at mid-terms. 1 Ruth Wickersham and Fred Houston directed the Mexican hat dance and mock bull- fight which carried out the Spanish theme of our Toreros' homecoming activities, co- sponsored with the men's college sophomores. At Thanksgiving time the class sponsored a clothing drive in addition to the annual food drive, headed by Polly Holmberg. A cookie drive was supported by the class, under the direction of Nancy Erhardt, for Mercy Hospital's children's Christmas party. As the first semester ended, with brain-taxing finals and Father Walshe Murray's strengthening retreat, a few new members were welcomed into the class. Second semes- ter swept by in a whirl of dances, exams, beach parties, and upper division courses. Un- forgettable were the class parties at Patti Tiernan's and Joni Karpinski's, where last year's operetta was revived and excess poundage was twisted away. But standing out above all was the traditional Bal des Fleurs, given in May. Hours of hard work, under the able chairmanship of Polly Holmberg, were rewarded by the resulting success of the dance. The year closed as the class of '64 bid the class of '62 a tuneful adieu in a serenade on class night. Then sophomores scattered to their homes for a summer's rest, looking for- ward to returning to their beloved Alcala as upper-classmen. Unity of the class under Norma Peck spelled success and foreshadowed the enthusiastic spirit of support which characterized our junior year. House parties were a favorite form of entertainment. Resident students enjoyed the hospitality of Carol Barr and the class opened the Christmas season with a barbeque with College for Men students at Patricia Quirk's home. Class rings arrived in time to take home for Christmas vacation and were received with traditional happiness. Also in this season the class sponsored a charity project, send- ing Christmas cards to rest home patients and providing Christmas presents for a needy family. During the year juniors supported USD activities - electing Patricia Shannon our homecoming princess, attending rallies, backing the new spirit club formed by Carol Lowney and Donna Brower. Spring semester found juniors singing songs from Father Lanphier's Hallabulu and practicing for the Mardi Gras Variety Show. The jointly sponsored upper division supper dance saw juniors and Seniors cooperating to add a new event to the social calendar. The annual Fashion Parade and the memorable Prophecies marked the end of an active year. Looking forward to vacation and our return as Seniors, the juniors also recall a happy and profitable year under the kind guidance of our counselor, Mother Shaffer. ir X F?
