DEDICATION Many yearbooks are iiitroduoed each year. Few are unique. Yet com- mon to all is a word which should be synonymous with institutions of higher learning. This word is knowledge. This book is not dedicated to human beings. They are transient. Rather it is dedicated to the things they have left behind. This is what makes knowledge what it is. We need only to look at the legacy of the Greeks for the foundations of our present-day knowledge. Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Demosthenes are only a few of the many Greek names that are commonly known. Yet few of us realize the contributions that the Greeks have made to our present-day culture. I say present-day culture because time is relative in regard to knowledge. We cannot call these people ancient because the connotation attached to this word ancient means that their ideas are obsolete, discarded, or were only useful for the time of the Greeks themselves. Inquiry proves this false. We still have not answered Socrates ' question of what justice is al- though we all seem to have an idea of what it is not. Have you ever stopped to pose that question sometime in your life and only developed generalities because that is where man ' s mind rests most easily? We venture to say that we haven ' t added as nuich to man ' s knowledge of himself as we sometimes think. Yet we always initiate our search for knowledge with the Greeks. When we think of Greece we think of Athens, of democracy, of Plato and his Republic, and some of the greatest contributions to society that the world has yet known. Vivid in our minds are the tragedies of Aeschylus, Euripides, and Sophocles. Names such as Homer and his Iliad and the Odyssey are all so familiar. Taken individually they are artistic accomplish- ments of great magnitude: taken collectively they point out the vast legacy of debt that is owed to the Greeks. We are indebted to them not because they were noted for their proficiency with the sword, but rather because their minds were keen and razor-edged. We here at New Haven College, as do all college students, have obligation to these Greeks. We can never hope to repay the vast legacy of knowledge that they have given us. But we can add to this knowledge. We can use the knowledge that we have the opportunity to gain at New Haven College to provide us with a foundation to enhance and enlarge our intellects. We have the opportunity to leave a legacy of our own that may some day be considered as adding to man ' s knowledge. We have the opportunity: we have the responsibility. It is up to each one of us individually to fulfill this responsiljility.

The Chariot Staff takes great pleasure in presenting to you, the class of nineteen hundred sixty-three, this year ' s issue of the yearbook — the first to be published by New Haven College. In this book we have tried to capture our school life as we have lived it in the past — and as we will remember it long after we liid farewell. This staff has achieved the distinction of being the first to have completed a great undertaking, the editing of a new book in a new, fast-growing institution. We hope that this book will act as a pioneer for year- books of the future. SAWYER GRAYSON Editor-in-Chief I
