♦ .♦♦•.♦■ To The Graduates As many commencement speakers em- phasize, the Commencement Exercises rep- resent your entry into a new life — a be- ginning. Although this is oft-repeated, it is very true. You graduates are blessed and cursed with an entry into a very dynamic and tech- nological society that will require your constant alertness and continued education- al training whether it be on a formal or informal basis. Methods must be found, for example, to speed up the education and training of specialized manpower: new education-in- dustry relationships must be formed: inno- vations between educators and professional and technical societies are needed. Other vital sectors of our society, in addition to officials of higher education, are intimately involved in the solutions to our manpower problem. But the challenge to vou as college gradu- ates in the total spectrum of responsibility calls for further daring exploration, objec- tive analysis and action. In brief, your edu- cation is just beginning. Dean Hutchinson ALLEN C. HUTCHINSON, Dean Ph.D. PHILLIP KAPLAN Director of Eveiiinp, Division I should like to take this opportunity to extend to the students of the Evening Credit Program who are receiving degrees at the June commencement my congratulations and best wishes for future suc- cess. Your enthusiasm for education has been remarkable and the sacrifices that lui ha e made to obtain it deserve the warmest ap- proval of the faculty and administration of tiie college, of our families and our community. It is our hope that many will continue their education. In this endeavor I know that ou will have the fullest support and encour- agement of all associated with the College. P. Kaplan

THE PRESIDENT To The Graduates This is the first time a president of New Haven College has been able to offer his congratulations to a graduating class in the form of a yearbook message. There is great meaning in this opportunity because the very existence of a yearbook is tangible evidence of our changing college. The three years at our West Haven campus have seen phenomenal change and growth, most of which has per- tained to our full-time programs. This quantitative change pre- sents a very important and grave question: Are we aware that a change upward in quantity alone is not enough? This year ' s evalua- tion and re-accreditation of all our existing programs indicate that we have been concerned with quality. We are gratified that educators from without our own walls found us more than acceptable. We are challenged bv the recommenda- tions thev have made, and find them justified. All point toward making good quality better and we accept these challenges and will meet them. We believe that we have over- come the many basic and urgent problems of our quick transition. We have the necessities to work with, we have a real student body in both numbers and spirit, and we have the basic faculty and staff upon which we can build an ever- stronger teaching and administra- tive organization. Just as our College grows, so does the alumni. Some of you will continue vour education here and not become alumni for two more vears, but whether now or then, we challenge you to accept the respon- sibilities of a good alumus. The best wishes of our entire College Family, and my own, go to each of vou who are granted your degrees this vear. larvin K. Peterson
