SOMAN The student body, both present and future, has suffered a lament- able loss in the untimely death of Sham D. Soman, Assistant Professor of Removable Prosthetics. His moral contribution, love of teaching, deep personal interest in young people, and a sincere interest in scientific pursuits established him as an outstanding example to we who knew him. We take this opportunity to pay tribute to Dr. Soman, in due cognizance of his lifetime dedication to professional school teaching and his invaluable service to the dental students. But above all we must gratefully acknowledge him for bringing to light in us that vague and yet paramount entity, the state of mind which determines a good dentist. We will miss him. His mild friendly manner and easy-going temperament have won him the respect of every student and faculty member as well. It was reassuring to know that one instructor in particular was not only willing but also very capable of advising us whenever we needed guidance. It is in appreciation of this interest in the individual student that the Class of 1968 takes a great deal of pleasure in electing Dr. Stanley H. Satz On Septembei , 1964, ninety-nine men embarked on their careers in dentistry (one member never arrived, thus beginning a trend for the Class of ' 68). Anatomy and Histology proved to be the first two hurdles, and after three months our number had dropped to ninety. The Sophomore year came — and more of us went. Some addi- tions and subtractions later our number stood at ninety as we shed our Jungle greens and donned our Clinic whites. Before we knew it, 1968 was here, and the remaining eighty-nine were faced with countless big problems: fourteen units of C B, molar root canals, gold foil require- ments ( ! ! ) . Nonetheless, our Senior year came and went much too fast. It was the year of assignments, more cancellations, and still wondering who Szabo was. None of us can ever forget looking through that first set of charts, exposing our first pulp, or sitting through those wonderful (?) pre-clinical lectures. Anxiety was at its height when we inserted that first denture with fingers crossed. Now with infamous Anatomy and Histology a part of our legen- dary past, we assert more than ever that enthusiasm of those first weeks of school. Like many of the classes before us, we await hopefully the completion of the new Dental School. To us it will be a real symbol of the new dentistry that we are learning about — a dentistry with a broader scope and a larger role in both the com- munity and the nation. As we taste more and more the reality of dentistry in our early acquaintance with the clinical setting, we look forward to next year when we can learn more and really grab dentistry by the teeth. Seif The University of Maryland Student Dental Association works to foster the relationship between the individual student and the faculty and to maintain it by an active system of communications down to the section representative level. Problems are discussed at luncheon meetings with the Dean, who constantly remains abreast of student affairs. The Executive Committee of the U.M.S.D.A. has formulated a Code of Ethics which is scheduled to go into effect in September, 1968. This Code is a sequela of the year-old Constitution which is being used as a model by other dental schools. This year also saw the publication of a revised student handbook. Each year the U.M.S.D.A. is the sponsor of three class dances, a U.M.S.D.A. mixer, and the senior banquet. It also administers a short term emergency loan fund for the students. The Society was named in honor of Ferdinand J. S. Gorgas, an alum- nus and leading contributor to dental education and literature. Membership in the Society may be achieved in either the junior or senior year. Consideration for membership in the Society is based on the premise that certain academic standards have been met in the first two years of study. Monthly meetings afford members educational benefits beyond the outlined den- tal school curriculum through the presentation of guest speakers. Walsh Steven M. Baum The Aisenberg Research Society was founded in 1967 by dental students inter- ested in sharing research ideas with prominent dental researchers and each other. The Society was named after the eminent researcher and former Dean of the University of Maryland Dental School, Dr. Myron S. Aisenberg. Among the speakers of interest presented this year were included lecturers from the National Institute of Health and the Lancaster Cleft Palate Institute. Dr. Aisenberg has also presented his own famous research at several of the meetings.
