After graduating from Baltimore City College, he attended Johns Hopkins University where he received his predental training. He entered the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery several years after graduating from Johns Hopkins in 1932 with an A. B. degree. ' I ' o OU; OSLOY-tD^ There is a bronze tablet in the Library of the University of Maryland Dental School dedicated to the memory of Dr. B. Holly Smith, a distinguished graduate and an illustrious member of the dental profession. Dr. Smith was born the son of the Reverend and Mrs. B. H. Smith on March 17, 1858, in Piscataway, Maryland. He attended the Loudon Valley Academy in Virginia. Dr. Smith completed his education in Baltimore schools, receiv- ing his D. D. S. degree from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery in 1881 and an M. D. degree from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1883. At his alma mater Dr. Smith was a Demonstrator of Anatomy and Materia Medica and later Professor of Operative Dentistry and Oral Surgery. He also served as Professor of Dental Surgery as Applied to Medicine at the College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Smith was a prolific contributor to dental literature. Among his more important dissertations were The Etiology of Dental Caries, which was given at the Sixth International Dental Congress in London in 1914; Our Mis- sion and Hoiv Shall We Discharge It?, at the National Dental Association Meeting in 1898; Critical Review of Some Changes in the Teaching and Practice of Dentistry, given before the Indiana State Dental Society meeting of 1903; Success in Dentistry, at the Pennsylvania State Dental Society meeting in 1904; and Aristocracy in Dentistry, published in 1912. Because of his profound interest in the betterment of the embryonic profession of dentistry and his innate ability to organize and lead his colleagues Dr. Smith became a pillar of many dental societies. He was an honorary member of the New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas, Georgia, North Carolina and District of Columbia Dental Societies. Dr. Smith served as a Delegate to the International Dental Congress in Stockholm in 1894, Vice-president and Chairman of the Reception Committee of the Lewis and Clark Dental Congress at St. Louis in 1904, and First Vice-president of the Jamestown Dental Convention in 1907. At the meeting in 1897 in which the National Den- tal Association and the Southern Dental Association united to form the American Dental Association Dr. Smith was elected Vice-president of the Southern Division. Because of his profound interest in dental education Dr. Smith was elected Secretary of the National Association of Dental Faculties. Dr. Smith was a member of Delta Sigma Delta Fraternity and a Fellow of the American Academy of Dental Science. Because of his sincere interest in the international exchange of thought he was extremely active in the Fed- eration Dentaire Internationale. The multifaceted career of Dr. B.
