The week of April 22nd brought spring weather anc bright enthusiasm. An Olympic Torch was placed on the library's steps and light- ed in ceremonial style to signify the begin- ning of the week's events. The traditional Greek Week festivities were scheduled. Fraternities, sororities and little sister programs all participated in the Greek Sing. Each group competed for points on the basis of attendance, song choice, presentation and LOUDNESS. The Red Cross sponsored the blood drive, held in the Memorial Gym. which proved again to be a great success The Greek Games were held Saturday. April 28th. There was a slight change in the agenda this year. The games were moved from the football field, the traditional loca- tion. to the field where The Cabins' once stood. The move did not affect participation or enthusiasm; everyone had a good time. Some games held were the Three- Legged Race, the Keg Throw, the Wheel- barrow Race. Tug of War and the Charict Race. The winners of each game receive: points which were tallied throughout the day and the final winner announced when the last game was completed. Members of fraternities, sororities and 1- tle sister programs look forward to Greek Week as a time to take part in fun competi- tion and to enjoy special activities with thar peers. The faculty and non-Greeks' of the student body also enjoy cheering on the Greeks and sharing in the celebrations in the first of Maine's spring air. Greek Wed: has come to signify that spring has armed and that another school year is quickly coming to a close. by Wanda Hamilton 186 187 I 189 I BUMSTOCK 11V2 i 11 190 ________________SENIOR FORMAL ,1 195 197 198 199 200 201 f 209 «! 210 DORM LIFE Dorm life is a major part of life at (MO. The majority of students live in a dorm at some time during their stay. Some memories of dorms are good — the friendships that have formed with roommates and dorm mates, the personal growth that resulted from being away from home for the first time, the gatherings to watch favorite TV shows like General Hospi- tal, Star Trek and M A S H. But there are bad memories also, a few situations dorm residents were happy to leave behind — people shouting in the halls, or playing their stereos too loud dur- ing study hours or after quiet hours, the cafeteria food (even though the cooks tried their best), and false fire alarms pulled after everyone has gone to bed. Even so. the dorms are a different life- style arrangement Each dorm and complex is unique and exists in a small neighbor- hood within the larger world of (JMO. Wells Complex is the largest on campus with six dorms — Corbett, Dunn, Hancock Hannibal Hamlin, Hart and Oak Halls. Hannibal is the oldest dorm on campus, built in 191 Lit was renovated in 1981, and changed from the den for Hannibal's Animals to a coed, multi-cultural dorm housing both foreign students and those American students with an interest in i multi-cultural atmosphere. Hart Hall was formerly a female dorm but was changed to coed in the fall of 1983 Oak Hall, an all-male dorm, is the only sin- gle sex dorm left in the complex. Oak is famous for its ‘sneaker tree located in the front of the dorm, into which pairs of sneak- ers would be thrown and left hanging from its branches. Students may choose to live in Wells Complex because of its proximity to the gym. field house and swimming pool. Most class buildings are just a short walk away since Wells is the closest complex to the mall. Stodder Complex consists of four dorms which form the quad.' Located in the vee formed by College Avenue and Munson Road, it is the complex nearest the fraternity houses. The second oldest dorm on campus. Balentine Hall, a female dorm, was built in 1914-1916. and is located in Stodder. Other dorms there are Chadbourne. Penobscot, and Stodder Halls, which are all coed dorms. York Complex consists of five dorms — Aroostook. Colvin. Estabrooke. Kennebec and York Halls — and York Village, a 35- unit apartment complex. Estabrooke Hall, for students over 20, is primarily a graduate student dorm. Colvin Hall is a female co-op Memos 212 where residents cook their own meals. Aroostook is one of three all-male dorms on campus, while Kennebec is one of the four all-female dorms. In September of 1979, the complex held its first annual Southside Extravaganza, which is now held during the first weekend of each fall semester. The event included a street dance, lobster cookout. bonfire, and joke-telling contest. The Cabins, an alternative to dorm life, were located behind York Complex in a wooded area. They were torn down in 1982 because they needed extensive repairs and a new sewer system, and since they housed only 42 students. Residential did not con- sider the project to be financially feasible. Hilltop is the newest dorm complex with three identical dorms — Knox. Oxford, and Somerset, all built in 1967. They have the largest capacities on campus, housing up to 285 students. Hilltop is known for its Bergspitz (Ger- man for hill top ) Weekend in the fall. The Hilltop Commons houses a craft center and an exercise room known as the Hilltop Health Club. Stewart Complex has three dormitories — Androscoggin, a female dorm. Gannett, an all-male dorm, and Cumberland, a coed dorm. During the first weekend of school each year, the complex has an official wel- coming festival called Cum-And-Gannett. Camival-like booths are set up. and there are contests, games and special foods. At night, a dance is held outside under a tent There are many memories of life in the dorms that we will carry with us forever. Perhaps this article has helped to stir up a few of them, and has allowed others to take a peek into dorm life at (1MO. by Suzanna Mitchell 213 OFF-CAMPUS LIFE 214 215 Whether or not off-campus life proves to be a positive experience depends mainly on personal circumstances. Some of these cir- cumstances are common among many of those students living off campus — some are welcomed, others loathed. Advantages of Off-Campus Life: 1. A new chance to develop culinary skills. 2. The privacy of a home away from home becomes a reality. 3. Students find that life does exist beyond the (JMO campus, and that they are a part of it 4. The rules of dormitories and campus life are forgotten (ie: quiet hours, re- stricted parties, low noise levels). 5. Students can usually convince their parents and families that ‘ Apartment life saves money! (And in some cases, it does.) Disadvantages of Off-Campus Life: 1. A new chance to develop culinary skills. 2. The closeness of eight students in a two-bedroom apartment becomes a re- ality. 3. Off-campus commuters learn to ride The Bus. or if they own a car. they learn that the university does not provide enough parking spaces. 4. The rules and regulations of landlords prove to be as restricting as those of Residential Life (ie: six-month rent pay- ments. high security deposits). 5. Many apartments available in the Oro- no-Old Town area are high rent low appearance apartments where saving money is difficult. Mo matter how the pros and cons of off-campus life add up. it's true that of those students living in the dormitories. 75 per cent choose to move off campus prior to their fifth semester. For most, living off campus represents a welcomed change from dorm life. With this change, however, comes new problems, new hardships from day to day. and a new and challenging aspect of the college experience that can be found in no other way. by Ann Merry 216 217 r AFTER HOURS The night life in the Orono area can't be compared to that of New York City, or even to that of Portland. Orono, however, is a college town, and it is the students, gather- ing at the few local night spots, that liven the town with their excitement to be together. At about 9:30 each evening, the once crowded library thins out as many students file over to the Union for beer and popcorn at the Bears' Den. For other students, dancing to the Top 40' holds the key to relaxation and fun. For these UMO night-lifers, the Westmarket Down Under and the Bounty Tavern are the places to be. Aside from dancing, the Bounty is also known for its Rear of the Year and Ugliest Bartender contests. When Friday afternoon finally rolls around. Barstan's Happy Hour draws the students who meet for tacos and half- priced drinks. Then comes the weekend night life with parties and pizzas from Napo- li's and Pat's or rum bowls from the Oriental Jade. When the busy schedules of weekdays return, homemade soup and salad from the Town Farm Restaurant or pizza from Yianni's often taste better than Campbell's chicken noodle or the cafeteria's roast beef au jus. Good times, along with plenty of food, can always be found at the Oronoka and the Time Out, with MTV. The area surrounding UMO may be lack- ing in its social facilities, but it is always brought to life when students gather After Hours. by Ann Merry ... and one last stop • 5' a I ALONG THE MALL 222 223 225 a CLASS OF 1984 Dave N. That was the year Rudy Vallee broadcast the Maine Stein Song on his national radio program. After that broadcast, and many replays. 1.300.000 copies of Fill the Steins to dear old Maine ... were sold. The song was a hit from Paris to Shang- hai. The local press wrote article upon article about the song, praising its striking melody and rhythmic vitality. The Stein Song s rhythmic vitality is heard less these days, even here at Maine, but there couldn't be a more fascinating story behind this song. In her eighty years, she has witnessed crowds of proud stu- dents and alumni who rise whenever and wherever she is played, decades of con- troversy over her copyrights, and the wrath of crusading prohibitionists. Take a few minutes now and come back to 1905. A.W. Sprague, a University of Maine stu- dent. was director of the Band. He was pre- paring a concert program to be presented in Alumni Hall, built originally as a drill hall and gymnasium. A military march named “Opie was to be performed that evening. Sprague had always liked Opie. and an idea struck him. With the right lyrics, wouldn't an adaptation of Opie make a fine school song? Sprague was convinced, and he gave the music to his roommate, Lincoln Colcord. Colcord skipped his two morning classes, found a piano, and in a half hour, returned with the Maine Stein Song. Milk and Water: Obstacles abounded as Sprague and Colcord sought permis- sion to have the Stein Song performed publicly. The chairman of Musical Affairs said he would not approve a drinking song, and other administrators, agreed. They said that Maine, a prohibition state, could never justify such a song. Sprague and Colcord. in a last effort, brought their song to Dr. Fellows, then President of the University. After reading the words. Dr. Fellows said: Use it! To be sure it is a drinking song, but Maine is a prohibition state, and we are allowed to drink nothing but milk and wa- ter. The Musical Affairs chairman withdrew his opposition and the song was per- formed. It wasn't long before every Univer- sity of Maine student knew the song. A Hit: Several years later. Rudy Vallee. a native of Westbrook. Maine, came into the story. Rudy had spent only one year at Maine }ein £ on(j 'Till the Mint to tar old Mu tut. Sirntt 'tit tit raster) tiny! He played and sang a chorus of the Stein Song on his broadcast, and his listeners began request- ing him to play it again. The song was an immediate hit. The Boston Globe wrote, the Maine Stem Song has become a best seller, almost in a day. Those to whom the Univer- sity of Maine has been known largely for the excellence of its schools of engineering and forestry now look upon the institution with different eyes. The song's new-found popu- larity has put the University predominantly on the map. At first. A.W. Sprague and others from the University were flattered to hear their song broadcast from coast to coast. However, they later suspected Rudy Vallee of exploiting the song for his own benefit, and the fact that he changed a few notes and words intensified this feeling. Fischer: Even though the Stein Song made Maine famous, most of the royalties went elsewhere. The University had never made a real effort to buy the rights to Opie, and Carl Fischer Inc., a sheet music publishing company, came out the big win- ner. It is said that the money Fischer made from the sale of the song would have been enough to construct a new gymnasium on campus. Fortunately, a new gym was even- tually built, helped out in part by a generous donation from Rudy Vallee. Casino de Paris: While the Stein Song was constantly being played in night clubs and on the radio, it was in the news too. On May 24. 1930. The Bangor Daily News featured a picture of the University of Maine Band on the front page. The Band participated in a coast-to-coast hook-up of the Stein Song over CBS radio. The article stated that the purpose of the hook-up was to give the people throughout America, and other nations by short wave, a chance of hearing the famous Maine Stein Song played as only the University of Maine Band can do it. The Portland Press Herald described the Stein Song's popularity in Europe in an article stating: A representative of the Press Herald returning from Europe brings the news that the Maine Stein Song is as popular abroad as in the U.SA At the Casino de Paris, the orchestra played the Stein Song before the rise of the curtain, three times during the performance, and once again as the audience was leaving the Maine Stein Song. Annexes: Many people wondered if the University of Maine would see any drastic changes in enrollment because of the Stein Song’s immense popularity. The Mew York World took part in the speculation with these thoughts: Unless the nature of American youth has changed lately, it (the Stein Song) will probably bring so many students to the campus that annexes will have to be built on the buildings to hold them all. One can see them now. looking up Oro- no on the map. finding out the color is light blue, looking at the picture of the football team in the Spalding Official Guide. And on the basis of pictures, colors, and a rousing tune, they will make up their minds. The University officials, if they know their jobs, will have a few extra registrars on duty when the doors open next September. As it turned out, no extra registrars were needed. However. University president Harold S. Boardman could have used an extra secretary' to field questions about the Stein Song during the height of its populari- ty “Egotist”: The Director of the national Women's Christian Temperance Union wrote to President Boardman wondering if the Stein Song actually existed. She couldn't believe that a drinking song could have originated from the dry University of Maine campus. She also mentioned her displeasure with Rudy Vallee saying. It seems very presumptuous on the part of the young egotist to get publicity in this way. Her letter was signed. 'Yours for Na- tional Prohibition and Law Enforcement. Carolyn P. Lindsey. Other letter-writers mailed their feelings to President Boardman. A gentleman from Ashland. Wisconsin was concerned with the University's reputation. He was afraid that prospective students and their parents would think of the University as a night club with a certain Rudy Vallee in charge as Master of Ceremonies.' After the 1930's, most of the world lost its avid interest in the Stein Song, but one event in 1961 sparked a great deal of unrest in Maine. Mitch Miller, on his television show Sing Along With Mitch. sang the Stein Song but refused to include any refer- ence to Maine. He sang. Fill the Steins to college days instead of Fill the Steins to dear old Maine. and Let every jolly fellow sing instead of Let every loyal Maine man sing.” Mitch Miller lost a lot of friends in Maine but gained a formal resolution from the State of Maine Legislature protesting his actions. The day after the television pro- gram. an effigy of Mitch Miller hung from a University of Maine signpost as several stu- dents carried signs reading Swing Along With Mitch. Today on the campus of the University of Maine, the tradition of the Stein Song barely hangs on. There is a full carload of students that sing the Stein Song every Thursday evening after returning from Trivia Might at the Oronoka. But they are generally the exception, not the rule. by Bob Gordon Loncoln Colcord 307 COMMENCEMENT 308 1 I 309 310 i 312 313 .1 315 MOVING OUT ■ i I 317 318 MOVING ON: A Long-Winded Dedication I took a walk around the campus today for what will probably turn out to be the last time. It's quiet now with everyone gone for the summer, and there's no longer that sense of urgency that hangs in the air from September to May. There's more of a chance to look back and. in retrospect, try to make some sense out of five years that never seemed to make any sense at all. I suppose the most important thing I can say about my stay here is that this is where I grew up. I've learned things here that I don't think I could have learned anywhere else; valuable lessons about people, about life. And I learned only a handful of them in the classrooms and lecture halls. It's been a rollercoaster ride at best, but the highs and lows never had a chance to take hold. And the years slipped by so quickly. But it seems that everyone has had one year that was special. I've yet to meet anyone who can say that their entire stay here was just ducky. The older alumni seem to re- member their college days that way. but either the college experience has become much more complicated, or they've forgot- ten all the lows. I suspect it's a little of both. Of course it could be that I've just been talking to the wrong people. Or maybe that's the way it's supposed to be. For three years (or four if you're like me), we scratch and sweat and do whatever it takes to make the grade so we can move on. And then, as if to compensate, we're given one year that's special, that we ll want to keep sepa- rate from the others — one year that will always be magic. For me. my compensation came before the hard work. (As I said, it never made any sense.) I came to C1MO in the fall of 1979.1 lived in York Hall then, and if I could take all the good days I've seen during my stay here and live them all one after another, they would be that first year in York Hall. (Of course that was before the flurry of new restrictions that made the dorms, if not un- liveable. at least a lot less enjoyable.) But those were the days when we would spend our afternoons in the field behind the dorm, playing football or softball until it was too dark to see. Then we would hurry down to dinner before the dining hall closed down for the night, and after dinner we'd all go upstairs to watch M A S H before we settled in with the books for the night. There weren't many bad days that year, or if there were I've forgotten them over the years. It was my magic year, and nothing out of the ordinary happened to make it that way. I was just lucky. I found good friends — my other family I called them — and I was able to share with them one very good year. Somehow that all changed during the second year when we woke that Saturday morning in December to find that we had lost one of our friends, and we had to look inside ourselves and. one more time, try to make some sense out of a senseless situa- tion. But we pulled together, like families do. and that made us strong. I remember the night of the wake. I have to mention it. It was cold. We'd gone in two cars, ten of us. As the night went on. I noticed that the others had paid their re- spects and left, and I found myself in a room full of strangers, except for Al who had stayed behind to drive me home. I don't know how long I stayed, but when it finally came time to leave. Al put his hand on my shoulder and without saying a word, pushed the door open. And there they were, all of them standing in the parking lot. shivering, waiting patiently for me to finish whatever it was I felt I had to finish. I'll never forget that. That was the kind of bond that can be forged here, and that's really what this article is all about. That night we were all together in our room watching Monday Night Football, trying to force things back to normal, when the announcer broke in with the news about John Lennon, and I couldn't help but won- der where it would all end. It was a rollercoaster ride. sure, but look- ing back it seems that we learn the most about ourselves, and each other, at those ecstatic peaks and desperate lows. That's when we re really tested. And that's when the text books and lectures hold the less valuable lessons. All the members of my other family have gone in different directions now. I still see a few of them from time to time, and I never fail to get disapproving looks when I linger too long on the old times. But I don't mind. To me it would be a greater crime to bury the memories beneath what we are now. And so we move on. And there are no happy endings, because there are no endings. There's only change. And the best we can do is to find some way to leave our mark before we move on. And so with this book I've found my way to leave an indelible mark on this University. It seems only fitting that I should dedicate it to those people who have left an indelible mark on me ... To My Other Family.
