COLONEL FRANCIS R. FULLER KU. .. The Department of Military Science and Tactics offers young men at the University of Maine a four-year course leading to a com- mission in the Reserve. In past times of trouble, this training program has supplied a substantial pool of fine leadership for the Army of the United States. Today the need for Reserve Officers is as great as ever, if not greater than formerly. Our R.O.T.C. stands ready to help satisfy that need. One aspect of the Advanced Military Course is the six week summer camp that all candidates for a commission must attend. In the photograph below there is a group of Maine men taking infantry training at Fort Meade, Maryland, in july, 1949. The pictures on the opposite page show cadets in a few of their typical summer camp activities. All these photographs were taken by the United States Army Signal Corps. MW fc2ftfQfuftftl9 President Larry Kenney Vice President Harlan Choate Secretary George Dusty Treasurer The National Society of Scabbard and Blade is an organization the purpose of which is to maintain and raise military standards in American higher education. Maine members are chosen from among students enrolled in the R.O.T.C. Advanced Course. All new members are elected. In December, the Scabbard and Blade presented the annual Military Ball. This Conrad Groncl in year, as in the past, the Ball was one of the outstanding events of the social season at the University. At the Ball, Colonel Francis R. Fuller, U.S.A., presented to Miss Jo -losslyn the hon- orary commission of lieutenant-colonel. Miss llosslyn was elected from a Held of live pretty candidates.
