SWICK CAIWPUS JASPER FARNHAM GROUSE Director, The Brunswick Campus The freshmen of The Brunswick Cam- pus, in this the ir first year of college, have clearly shown themselves to be worthy citizens of the University of Maine. In the important routine of classes, lectures, laboratories, and study, they have con- sistently demonstrated maturity, serious- ness of purpose and diligence. The rec- ord is good. Beginning college work off the Orono campus and without the presence of up- per classmen presented disadvantages and advantages. To have dwelt upon the former would have brought only unhap- piness; the Brunswick freshmen quickly chose to emphasize the latter. Early in the year student leadership became evident and from then on extra- curricular activities made an important contribution to the college life. Especi- ally commendable is the spirit of under- standing and cooperation that the stu- dents demonstrated throughout the year. I congratidate them wholeheartedly. 20

PHILIP J. UROCKVVAY DIRIXTOR OF PLACEMENT BUREAU JOHN C. SEALEY, JR. ALUMNI SECRETARY When a University student looks for a job, be it for summer or for l ife, he goes to see Phil Brockway. The Place- ment Bureau, of which he is chief, ren- ders an outstanding service in providing advice and aid to graduates and under- graduates alike. No matter how smoothly operated, it is an obvious fact that machinery needs must occasionally break down. When anything happens to plant or equipmeni the call is for none other than our ca- pable Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds, Carroll Dempsey. To keep the old grads in touch with activities at the alma mater is the jol) which occupies John Sealey ' s time. This year, most of his time has been devoted to organizing support for the new Union Building. Many years of service have made our Librarian, Louis Ibbotson, a campus in- stitution. Caretaker of numberless vol- umes, he is ever willing to lend a hand to a student in distress. And a big word of commendation to the Library staff. And just to keep the world informed as to what goes on at the school, there is Howard Keyo, Publicity Director. If a news story concerns anyone even remotely connected with the University, a release from Keyo spreads the word. 1 1 t • g t M 4 u : ' ..jj CARROLL DEMP.SEY SUPT. OF BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS LOUIS T. HARRY W. GORDON ASSISTANT TO TREASURER JONATHAN V. FRENCH DEAN OF MEN Setting up and running an entirely new imiversity unit is no small task, a teat deserving of the highest commenda- tion. To Director Jasper Grouse and his veiy able assistants goes the praise in recognition of their outstanding accom- plishment. Director Grouse has had the biggest job of all, guiding and coordinating as the .Vnnex got into jiroduction. His sincere and skillful efforts have been in large part responsible for the successfid record Brunswick has enjoyed. Money is an object to Harry Gordoa, Annex treasurer. Through his hands flow the funds which keep the machine oper- ating. Francis McGuire is the other man on the business angle, managing all the varied internal dealings of the Depart- ment. Supervising some eight hundred vet- eran freshmen has been interesting work for Dean of Men Jonathan French, but it has been no easy job. In his spare time he doubles as Instructor in French. Dr. Gharles L. Tuttle administers to physical needs, and dispenses pills, tonics, and ad- vice with a liberal hand. And the girl who keeps the records straight for the new campus is Marcia Allen. Again congratulations to the Bruns- wick staff for a fine job. CHARLES L. TUTTLE, M.D. DIRECTOR OF HEALTH SERVICE MARCIA A. ALLEN ASSISTANT TO REGISTRAR FRANCIS S. MCGUIRE A.SSISTANT TO BUSINESS ANAGER 21
