This enrollment will prob- ably not increase appreciably within the next few years, for the University has no desire to overload its facilities for graduate study. For the same reason. onl a Master's degree is con- ferred at the University of Maine. Health Service T1HE Health Department offers clinic diagno- ■ - sis and treatment to ailing students. Cooper, Haw, Alcott, llcnkle, Loupret High» Shoulder Arm»' Military TWO years of military training are required of all physically fit male students in the Uni- versity. After these two years of basic training, several men are allowed to enroll in advanced military courses as cadet officers. Cadet officers are paid by the hour for their services, but must buy their own tailor-made uniforms. Supervised by Colonel Robert K. Alcott. the five army officers who serve as professors of Mili- tary Science give instruction in Coast Artillery to men from the College of Technology and in- struction in Infantry to men from the rest of the University. There are 318 coast artillery students. 381 infantrymen, and 101 cadet officers, a total of 800 men from the four classes. In their study of the science of modern war- fare, the students are aided by $120,000 worth of equipment, including .22 caliber and .30 caliber rifles, automatic rifles, one pounders, infantry mortars, machine guns, a three-inch anti-aircraft gun with plotting room and range finders, and a 155 mm. howitzer. In the course of a year, the department uses about 90.000 rounds of .22 cali- ber ammunition and 5.0(H) rounds of machine- gun ammunition.
