The Coast .Artillery does close order Infantrv drill, and the three batteries usu- allv win a fair share of first lines Iroiu the In- lantrv at Saturdax parades. As Freshmen the studies ranged Irom Mili- tary .Sanitation to Coast Artillery Ammunition antl drill on the massi e fifteen-ton 155-millimeter gun that adorns the Indoor Field. Last year, range-finding for moxing targets was studied and drill in the 3-inch anti-aircraft gun and range- finding devices with a complete plotting room set-up. From the Juniors who volunteered last fall twenty-eight men of 1940 were selected to consti- tute the first .Advanced Course group. The Coast .Artillery [uniors are looking forward to the six- weeks ' camp on the coast of A ' irginia this summer. Next year, with four classes represented for the first time, the new unit will reach maturity: we of 1940 shall always be proud that we blazed the trail for those who will follow. The Extension .Service, under the leadership of Director . rthnr L. Deering. is a co- operati e agency, working with the United States Department of .Agriculture and fourteen (oinitv farm bureaus to assist rural people in a scientific approach to the solution of their ])rol)knis. Well-trained University representati es are serving each county of the state, and to them come farmers, homemakers, and rinal xouih In the hundreds for assistance and advice. These county extension agents are coustanth kept informed of latest de elopments in farming and homemaking by state specialists working from the College of .Agriculture. The interest of rural Maine in the Extension Service is evidenced by the fact that there were this ear 3.t)92 xolimteer leaders working vith exitnsion agents to administer the adidt ]jrogram and 831 such leaders guiding 7,000 4-H lidj members in tlieir work. The exten- sion organization is statewide, and 384 communities support a local group. Extension is objectively aiming at a better rural life in Maine, and, with the assistance of rinal people, is makinsr farm life more secine and attractive.
