Chase Dean of Graduate Study EXTENSION SERVICE Cf )R TWENTY-FIVE YEARS the Extension Service of the College of Agriculture has sought to make science the servant of the men and women of rural Maine. At the end of the first quarter it can well look back with satisfaction on a hard-fought game — a game marked by significant gains toward the goal of better living for those who farm the soil of Maine. The game, however, is only well begun. The Extension Service team of University- trained county agents, home demonstration agents, county club agents, and specialists is strategically placed, ready to serve every rural community in every county of the state. The team is young, but it knows the plays. It has learned the rules of the game from men like Director Arthur L. Deering who have been with the service since its inception. The Extension Service now looks forward toward the next quarter in the increas- ingly complex game of modern agriculture. Far better equipped to play the game, the Extension staff has as its powerful allies the University of Maine, the U. S. Department f Agriculture, and organized farm bureau groups and 4-H Clubs in hundreds of Maine communities. Through their united effort, science is becoming the servant of Maine farmers and their wives. aS
