Profare NEVER before during tbe twenty-three years of its history hos The Prism singled out so many colors lroin the spectrum of college activities nor have these colors been singled out in such « pronounced manner as during this past year. The honors that have been won the achievements that have been accomplished are more varied and of greater importance than ever before in our University history, and so we as Editors feel that an unusually great responsibility rests upon us to record and permeate the events of the past year in a manner worthy of and suitable to the merits. The purpose of this volume is to accurately and clearly fet fortli the happenings of the year beginning lebruary 1. 1915. and ending February 1. 1916: also to foster an admiration more strong, a respect more deep, a love more sincere for this our University and the asso- ciations that we may connect with ovir beloved Alma Mater. These two purposes, we sincerely hope, at least in some small measure have been accomplished. Many persons have been interested and have aided materially in the preparation of this volume. We cannot thank them all individ- ually, for they are too numerous, but we do wish to tjkc this occasion to thank the following few: Mr. E. J. Haskell 72. Prof. R. K. Jones 86. and Prof. G. P. Weston 96. for their kindness and will- ingness shown by preparing the articles of ” Student Life in the Past. We wish to thank the Editor-in-Chief and Business Manager of the last years PRISM Board for their advice and assistance, and all those connected with the printing and engraving of this volume. Finally we wish to acknowledge the services of the following members of the Class of 1918 and we recommend them to their classmates : For Editor-in-Chief EDWIN HYLAND MAY JOHN HENRY MAGEE ARTHUR FREDERICK KAULFUSS MAURICE CLINTON GROSS JOHN PARKER RAMSAY ROGER BENSON HILL JOSEPH WILLIAM McGRATH For Business Manager CLYDE ALLEN BENSON MANLEY WEBSTER DAVIS DONALD BURKE PERRY

A Siurieut nf the Hear Not the History of Any Particular Class but Rather the History of the Univer- sity as a Whole “Something attempted, something done, this line fi«.m f.ong fellow cor- rectly describes the history of our University from February I, 1915, to February 1. 1916. This has been a year of accomplishments, this has been a year of achievements. Our athletic victories have brought us national fame, and our social successes personal pleasure and pride. We commenced the year with a Poverty Ball, a very appropriate affair for the average college man to attend as the name implies, especially after mid- years. We believe most of the students thought so by the way they turned out” that evening. Of course it was a success! W inter athletics, loo, played a prominent part in our life. We enjoyed hockey matches down on the river, the Seniors (1915) enjoying their match with the Sophomores (1917) to the tune of 2-0. and the Freshmen (1918) triumphing over the Juniors (191O). 5-0. Then our relay team attended the B. A. Relays and were defeated by Bowdoin’s team of unusual ability. But our class basketball games! Capt. Georgic Kirk’s band of 1916 fighters gave the other classes hardly a look in at the “show down.’’ April was the month of rain, all right, and it's reputation was not hurt in the slightest degree by the way the torrents descended. Tennis court construction was de- layed and baseball practice was halted. So our endeavors were confined to the so-called indoor sports. We revived intercollegiate debating. We sincerely hope this form of college activity will not die another death. Well, we lost to Colby on the evening of the twenty-first of April, but it was our first attempt. On the evening of April 22d, following the usual custom, while the Sophomores 1917) were entertaining their friends at the finest Sophomore Hop ever held in Alumni Hall, the Freshmen (1918) were banqueting in Bangor, and on the 23d of April the newspapermen from all over the State gathered on our campus to attend the first annual Newspaper Institute. The Military Ball came the 29th. A fine drill by a selected company, fine music, and a well waxed floor caused the evening to pass swiftly. Fine May days, sun always shining; evenings, clear and warm; the campus neat in its appearance and splendid in its new green foliage; bevies of pretty girls; what more is needed to cause the Maine boys to have one of the most delightful Junior Weeks ever! The Class of 191O claims it was the best ever, but then, 1917, had not had the opportunity to manifest its ability to stage a supreme class Junior W eek. Junior Chapel on May 7th, Junior From, in y
