Dean Duncan, MSJ News Media Specialist James Schneider, BSE News Media Specialist Public, Student Affairs Programs enhance SCA, aid students Obiective of the office of public affairs is to cre- ate and support programs which will present State College of Arkansas in the most favorable light and thus enhance its position and stature both on and off campus. Dean Duncan and James Schneider, news media specialists, inform the public of SCA activities in- volving students, faculty, staff, new programs, and related activities. This is done by working through newspapers, radio, television, and professional iournals. Dr. James Sylar, director of student activities, assists student organizations in developing and main- taining worthwhile and official services to the or- ganizations and to the campus. His office serves all students through guidance and counseling, on indi- vidual and group basis. SCA calendar of social, cul- tural, and athletic events is maintained here. He is chairman of the Public Appearances Committee which presented cartoonist George Fisher's Arkansas folk- lore, Pine Bluff Commercial's Pulitzer prize winner Paul Greenberg, Ouachita University Players in Sophocles' Antigone , Danish classical guitarist Nicolai Nielsen, Stephens College Dancers, and Sue Abbott Boyd, editor of the Journal South and West. Miss Dorothy Long, dean of women, works with SCA Association of Women Students and with SCA College Panhellenic Council. Also included in her work are visits and conferences with individual stu- dents. She was involved in planning and bringing about Open House at Carmichael Hall and Hughes Hall and improvement of facilities in Bernard Hall ground floor including furnishing of a lounge for commuting women students. Although the dean of men's office has some ad- ministrative duties, most of Mr. John Hurley's time is spent working directly with students individually. This includes counseling with men students on topics ranging from traffic tickets and class cutting to serious personal problems. Traffic control also comes under the direction of the dean of men. Placement office, directed by Mr. Charles R. Teeter, is designed to help students and alumni find rewarding employment in a variety of fields, includ- ing business, industry, education and government. The office stresses the need to combine academic planning with career planning, works to achieve this by offering free vocational counseling and maintaining an up-to-date vocational library, provides practical information on current employment trends and re- quirements, and brings students and company repre- sentatives together in iob interviews. Field counseling is done by Mr. Tommy Smith, director of public relations. Visits are made to many schools each year and advice given to hundreds of high school students concerning the opportunities available for them at SCA. Office of Student Financial Aid, directed by Mar- vin Bishop, assists students with their financial prob- lems. Students may receive financial aid from schol- arships, National Defense Student Loans, Educational Opportunity Grants, Nursing Loans and Scholarships, Guaranteed Student Loans, College Work-Study Pro- gram iobs and campus iobs. Law Enforcement Edu- cation Program grants are now available to law en- forcement personnel for degree studies and for similar studies to students preparing for police and corrections careers. Three cafeterias meet the nutritional needs of students and try to develop good basic nutritional habits.
