Not until the brilliant colors decorate the trees, splash the sidewalks, and bury the lawns has autumn really arrived. The season hints of the future efootball, classes, nature walks, Homecoming, bonfires, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas . . The season suggests life. Suddenly, hot chocolate and snowmen arentt so far off, and they arent as forbidding as they were on those hot Iuly nights. A whole new set of senses is reawakened, a whole different set of thoughts appear. As na- ture prepares for winter's onslaught, students everywhere pre- pare for the onset of different opportunities, experiences, and feelings. Autumn - its more than a change in seasons vit's a change in lifestyles. mg Homecom HBut it was Homecoming!" Oh - what an excuse! Good for missed pa- pers, deadlines, meetings and sleep, or postponements of trips home, ap- pointments, and other sane aspects of life. Although a reason is not always totally necessary, a college home- coming offers the more conservative element of the campus population an opportunity to join in the fun, frolic, and friendships which make Homecoming a time of unity. No matter which dorm you inhabited, whether you came from the east or west side, off campus or on, theater or accounting, intensive study or in- tensive party, football player or chess expert oit didn,t matter. The Wonderful World of Disney was just for you. Graduation After four long years -and in some cases a little longer -that day finally arrived. Graduation for most was a combination of joy, fear, ex- citement, sadness and achievement all rolled into one day. We were joyful that we survived the battery of tests and exams, lec- tures, homework, term papers and the other hurdles along the way. We were sad to leave our friends, the Thursday nightts parties, and the fun we had during our four short years. We were afraid of the unknown that the future holds in store. And we were proud of our accomplish- ments and acheivements. But mostly we were excited that we finally made it! .1 1 'onn-uvmwnmwm maasb 13 It seems summer was just here. Bustling, happy crowds frolicking ?ayl under the sunts rays, children aug ingly struttin their youth on sun-baked streets, fovers strolling on warm misty nights. Where did it go? Each year we ask that. Each time, as four seasons pass and mankind is left about seven weeks behind, the same questions drift in and inhabit the mind on a lazy Friday night. Why so fast? Whatever happened to a season we had time to enjoy? Spring found us buried under mounds of papers, projects and tests. Our blurry, unfocused e es, once pried from books and tab ets, were aimed only toward our final escape. Somehow, summer slipped by in be- tween routine work, sporadic tennis games, frequent parties, and infre- quent sleep. Autumn rambled in at a molasses tempo, silently foreshad- owing the sluggish season ahead. Winter "a quiet, lingering time. Still, brisk days and long, tranquil nights offer a static background for thinking, wishing, and dreaming. Man was given a chance to catch up, while the world of nature slept. The more I saw, the less I knew Of things I once did own. The house and barn were still in tact, A little less for wear "Old Chic Sales swinging door Was hanging limb out there." "No longer hurrying feet had made A weather beaten path," But in its place a rassy plot Where weeds an twigs once did rot. The well kept trees and lawn That pa and ma kept clean Seemed not to fade nor wither But time and age made them serene. The percheron team that dad had bought Which nobly tilled the fields, All horse drawn and man made articles Had all but disappeared. Only sweet memories linger now That bus farm is stilled. And all t atls left for me to tell Is one old thought that can't be filled. --W.C. To some, the headaches of the Williams Center maze disap eared. To others, the pain worseneg. Experts placed 97 to 1 odds a ainst success in changing or ad ing sections. And they were proven right, as students faced hours of lines, a es of waiting lists, and solidly fille c asses. Finally, the traumas lessened and ,classes were scheduled. If you were luc , the schedule ou held in your han faintly resembled your original dream. Too many times, that Friday class you ended up with had manda- tory attendance, one prof had only an 8:00-9:15 class, and another re- uired section was late Friday. But t ere it was in front of you, and it would only be for three months, anyway. Finally registration was over with. All that remained was the problem of surviving a semester of classes. Lifestyles and Activities 23 l?! 5 MN, 24 Lifestyles As 1979 moved into 1980, UW-W students, with mixed emotions, fol- lowed. Life usettled," but never real- ly became routine. There were those days when superhuman will-power was needed to make that trek to Heide, or to actually concentrate on the blackboard 21 rows ahead in lec- ture. Piles of articles to read, speak- ers to hear, bills to pay, recitals to at- tend, and laundry to wash cluttered minds. College life went on. The new semester brought new challenges - new subjects to tackle, new classes to survive, different teachers to communicate with. Some challenges, though, just seemed to be a lot harder than others. To some, it was that computer class creating problems. To others, the job that had promised so much wasntt living up to expectations. Problems got you down. Yet, some force juggled events to balance Out moods. Lifestyles 25 26 Lifestyles Often, a friend appeared to rescue a lost day. The trials faced were so much easier if someone actually cared how that Econ test went, or really meant that offer to help paint a room. People rediscovered their need for other people. The 10,000 Personalities on camPus offered a different kind of happiness, a different solution to problems and needs of others With UW-W as the setting, bonds formed as relationships defied the unavoid- able pains and hurts. Students con- tinued their journey and learned to rely on others as well as themselves. The ,803 moved on. Lifestyles 27 Relaxing and Recreation Whether itis between classes, an empty night, or a lazy Saturday, Whitewater stu- dents find countless activities to fill time, relax, and enjoy. With a little money and work, hidden talents can be discovered at the Union, with billiards, bowling, or pin- ball. Video tapes, the Pub, quiet lounges, and bustling places to meet friends are all provided for even the poorest student at the Center. Not much is needed to make the college student content. Give him a frisbee, a football, a backgammon board, his TV soap and a good novel. Let him drift through a Saturday with just a few mel- low albums, or maybe a rowdy band at Starin Park. Point 3 student towards Wil- liams Center for a soothing swim or invigorating basketball scrimmage, or to- wards Friars' Woods for a nature-filled afternoon. Offer him some transportation, and watch him relax at Whitewater Lake, shop the Ianesville mall, or explore the small toWns 0f the area. Show him a cal- endar and observe his choices of plays, dinner theaters, movies, dances, contests, mini-courses, lectures, recitals, or exhibits he attends. Give a Whitewater student some free time. Don,t worry about what he'll do with it. It won,t be wasted. 28 Lifestyles Lifestyies 29 30 Lifestyles After weeks of ignoring assigned chapters, sleeping through lectures, and barely completing the required homework, tests appear and threaten the peaceful serenity of the student's routine. The library becomes a pop- ular place to be. In a solemn struggle against the clock, frantic highlighters squeak through chapters, rustling pages are quickly scanned and dispensed with, coke cans and Cheetos bags are opened more for in- centive than energy, calculators click with maddening repition. A common bond forms between students. Itts re- assuring to hear another shower be- ing turned on at 5:30 a.m., or see an- other desk light dimly glowing through the late hours of the night. The coke and coffee vending ma- chines constantly blink "selection empty" and breakfasts resemble comedy sketches as overtired schol- ars arise to meet another challenging day. HDo not disturb" signs dot the hallways, guaranteeing concentra- tion or much-needed sleep. Finally, the pressure lessens. Coke consump- tion drops, the library is deserted again and tempers return to normal. Serenity reappears. Lifestyles 31 ,. $$$$$wg Hey! Connor remains optimistic. Whitewater-like other schools in the UW Systemeis now on a tiplan- ning cycle" for what most expect to be a sharp drop in the number of Wisconsin high school graduates over the next decade. "We donlt think the decline will be as great here," said Connor. He says he's optimistic for the fol- lowing reasons: -UW-Whitewater is located near the high population centers in south- eastern Wisconsin. If anything, the gasoline shortage should be a plus for a southern school, he says, since commuting from Madison, Milwau- kee, or Beloit would be less expen- sive and use less fuel. -UW-Whitewater continues to profit from an outstanding reputation in several fields, particularly educa- tion and business. -UW-Whitewater is the number one uoutreach" school in Wisconsin. This year it will serve some 3,000 people with off-campus classes in a dozen countries. -New freshmen continue to in- crease, meaning at least four more years of large classes, and probably more. Connor also sees the possibility of a major tuition reduction for out-of- state students on the horizon. Right now a plan is being seriously consid- ered to reduce out-of-state costs by 40 percent, which could open the door for hundreds of students from outside of Wisconsin, particularly Il- linois. Back in 1970, Connor noted, there were 1,700 people from Illinois at- tending UW-Whitewater. Today there are less than 600. He says the constant increase in tuition are the cause for the drop. Connor also said that faculty re- training and redevelopment will be emphasized, so that faculty layoffs may be averted if student numbers do begin to fall. Major curriculum revisions are also possible, along with the expan- sion of professional programs in Business and Education, and special- ized programs in the College of Edu- cation. Money will also be a significant factor in the life of UW-Whitewater during the 1980's, says Connor. "1 think the major focus will be ong managing tighter and tighter re- sources," he says. Connor says the UW-Whitewater will continue to emphasize recruitment and retention of minor- ity and disadvantaged students, with particular help for students already in school but experiencing academic problems. Administration 45 BUSINESS8: ECONOMICS Dr. Joseph Domitrz College of Business and Economics Joseph Domitrz, Dean The College of Business and Eco- nomics continues to develop innova- tive programs for approximately 4100 undergraduate students en- rolled, according to Domitrz. Two examples are the new Man- agement Computer Systems major and the Public Policy and Adminis- tration majors that have been cre- ated with the College of Letters and Sciences this past year. Several students of the college have received national honors this past year. Senior Kevin Wolfmeyer's paper was selected as the best un- dergraduate paper in the nation by the American Production and Inven- tory Control Society. Rebecca Wolf had the highest score in the nation on the GPA. exams. This is the sec- ond time in three years that a UW- Whitewater student has had the top score. Domitrz hopes to timaintain where we are now and develop new pro- grams in the future? 46 Administration LETTERS8: SCIENCES Dr. Everett P. Fulton College of Letters and Sciences Everett P. Fulton, Dean According to Dean Everett P. Ful- ton, one half of all the credits taken at UW-Whitewater are in the C01- Iege of Letters and Sciences. Liberal Arts graduates with em- phases in General Business are pres- ently being employed at a high rate, Fulton said. Public Policy and Administration Management Computer Systems are new programs being offered both by the College of Letters and Sciences and the College of Business and Economics. Management Computer Systems graduates are much sought after by employers, according to Ful- ton. A program in International Stud- ies with a business emphasis is now being developed at the college. M t : Dr. Raymond Light College of the Arts Raymond E. Light, Dean According to Dean Light, ther were approximately 225 art majors 125 music majors, and 55 theate majors enrolled in the College of th Arts this past year. The college als employs about 42 full-time teachers. Amont the many programs offere in the College of the Arts was th- addition of a Bachelor of Fine Art in Theater. Light is presently working on . program to combine the arts an business. "This program would pre pare students to manage museums orchestras and community arts pro grams," Light said. "Right now it i just in the talking stage." The play, "The Physicists", wa one of the many entertaining pro ductions presented this year by th. music, art and theater departments. GRADUATE STUDIES Iffice of Continuing Education and Iutreach homas S. McLeRoy, Dean "The Continuing Education office an office open to new ideas and ormats. We deliver courses of credit nd non-credit to clientele," Thomas McLeRoy, Dean of the Depart- : ent of Continuing Education and Iutreach, said. "Our whole purpose to see a need and respond to itf' According to McLeRoy his office 3 responsible for off-campus ourses, scheduling evening classes or adults, running summer school, nd organizing conferences and amps. McLeRoy is proud of the fact that ince 1974 UW-Whitewater has been eading all other campuses in the tate in the number of students tak- ng off-campus courses for credit. This year, for the first time, the of- ice is offering an inter-session dur- ng the summer. The inter-session, ich is being held before summer chool, gives undergraduates a hance to earn three credits toward heir general studies requirements in ust three weeks. The continuing education office is ow attempting to adopt more non- redit programs in order to really ervice the educational needs of the rea, McLeRoy said. "We are a ser- ice to the university and the com- unity." CONTINUING EDUCATION II r. Arthur McGraw Dr. Thomas S. McLeroy College of Education Lewis Stoneking, Dean There are more than 3000 under- graduate students enrolled in the College of Education seeking certifi- cation as teachers, accordin? to Dean Lewis Stonekin . The col ege also enrolls 1700 gra uate students. It has been a good year for the College of Education. There has been an increase in student credit hour production. There is continued and rapid growth in the Outreach pro- grams, and the number of Health, Physical Education and Recreation majors. The number of dual majors in elementary and special education also remains high, according to Stoneking. A federal grant has been issued for the P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S. program. P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S., or the Progressive Retraining Or Generic Refinement of Early Childhood tEENi Skill Sys- tems rogram trains parents to work with t eir handicaplgied children. Presently, the co ege is preparing for national accreditation in the Spring of 1981 by the National Council for Accrediation of Teacher Education, or NACTE. Stoneking said he is beginning to see evidence of teacher shortages in certain areas. There are more posi- tions available than there are teach- ers prepared to filled them. EDUCATION Dr. Lewis Stoneking School of Graduate Studies Arthur G. McGraw, r., Dean The growth of t e graduate r0 mm at UW-Whitewater is indicated by t e fact that the number of graduate students registered has increased from 32 in the summer of 1960 to 1686 in the summer of 1979, according to Dean Arthur G. McGraw. In the 1979 summer school, raduate stu- dents com rised more than haI of the sum- mer enro iment, 55 percent. "On cam us credit" raduate students numbered 1884 ur- ing the first semester of 1979-80, with the ma- jority o raduate students coming from Rock, Walworti Waukesha and Milwaukee coun- ties. This number of students places UW- Whitewater as the third largest public andmr private graduate school in terms of "headcount" enrollment, in the University of Wisconsin System, and in the State of Wis- consin, next to UW-Madison and UWaMil- waukee. Degress offered by the UW-Whitewater Graduate Program include the Master of Sci- ence in Teaching, the Master of Arts in Teaching, Master of Science in Education, Master of Science, and Master of Business Administration. At present the school is awaiting appropri- ate action by the Central Administration on a request for entitlement for four Education Specialist degrees. The degrees are in school ps chology, guidance and counseling, business 6 ucation, and special education. The Central Administration has given per- mission to broaden safety education at the graduate level, according to McGraw. In ad- dition to school safety and tra ic safety, occu- pational safety is now bein a ered. The projection for enro ment in the fall of 1980 is for 1800 graduate students, according to McGraw. This decrease is due to the pre- dicted decline in colle e enrollment. With the expected approvaF of new programs, McGraw is optimistic that enrollment will re- main high. ORGANIZATIONS 50 Organizations Army e ROTC The 1979-80 school year saw a new Professor of Military Science take over the reins of the hard charging ttBold Ones." Lieutenant Colonel Bob Mountz assumed com- mand from Lieutenant Colonel Iim Stewart who retired after 20 years of military service. LTC Mountz is not a newcomer to Whitewater, having been assigned here since 1977. A banner year can best describe the 1979-80 school year for Whitewater's Army ROTC program. The university rifle team ttThe Shooting Irons? with team captain Dave Kochanski, posted a great win- ning season. Bolstered by sophomore Karen Shere's fine shooting, the team fared quite well in intercolle- giate and independent competition. A Unified Gamers Club was formed and immediately attracted a large membership. Gamers enga ed in several marathon sessions wit other teams from local universities. The University Colorguard under the command of CTLT Bill Lipke per- formed s ectacularly at football and basketbaH games and special events. The Tactics Team started the year with expanded membership in prep- aration for the State Tactics Meet. Also the Tactics Team supported the MS Department by arranging tactical problems for FTX. This year boasted the largest en- rollment in UW-W ROTC history. The 1979-80 school year was also the year of the woman, with CLTC Diane Chalberg being a pointed as Whitewaterts first fema e Batallion commander. Participation in the ROTC program this year has includ- ed about 30070 women. Diane Chalberg also received the presti- gious George C. Marshall Award, one of 275 recipients nationwide, for leadershi and academic excellence. Cadets T eresa Porter and Arthur Thiele were named in the Who's Who of American Colleges. Rena Keller became Whitewater's first student to complete both Airborne and Air Assault training. The year was hi hlighted by the second annual W itewater Half Marathon and the annual formal, both of which were successes due to cadet and cadre effort. Other news- worthy events included canoe trips, ski trips, the visit to FT. Sill, OK, FT. McCoy Field Trainin trips, and the pogular rappelling casses, held at Lo i. They leave that hanging, proceed- g to ignore this one facet of your :e, knowing in their hearts that you pent your inistake made in a mo- ent of weakness, and you, a inneiska editor, are forgiven. "Why did you do it? Why you?" riends are known to break down in smay. itHow can I get angry atyou, en though our wing picture was --taken nine times and delivered i e year late'rw An exaggeration, maybe. But for those involved, each delay seems like years, each mistake like mortal sin. And there were delays. And mistakes. And yet several dedicated students hung on in hopes of getting the yearbook completed. The lesson was in perseverence. The students were tested and re-tested. Problems were solved, situations handled, ag- gravations forgotten, delays dealt with, setbacks cried about and worked a round. Tbe work kept coming. The disappointments seemed to outnumber the satisfac- tions- until now. The 1980 Minneiska is finished. The quality may not be as high as some would prefer, but those perfectionists weren't, for some reason, available, as odds piled up against the staff. The struggle against almost un- beatable odds is through. It cost a lot, and returned very little- some experience, a little knowledge. Still, some will return for the same duties next year, despite the warnings of well-meaning friends. Hopefully, next time will be less of a war. Next time? Iim actually talking about next time?
