0EOICRTED T0 VICTOR Pub 1 ishccl by the Student Body of THK STATE TEACHERS COLLEGE Oshkosh Wisconsin Dorothy Durben ..... Editor Jane Anderson . . . Business ManagerAviation Students Today As this is written, we are engaged in the greatest war the world has ever known. Kvery young man and young woman has an immediate objective, to become fit for maxi m u m service in the war effort, that we may sooner reach victory. ATomorrow In time of war, we should be preparing for useful, constructive lives in the peace that will follow this war. Young people should be made to realize that it is their patriotic duty to continue their education so that they will be more useful in promoting a lasting peace. Peace and Plenty" tGuidance and Tomorrow Following this war must come a period of reconstruction. The demand then will be for greater efficiency. YVe must have well-educated and intelligent citizens who have sound judgment in dealing with the difficult problems of social and economic progress for life in this changing world. iMISS ELLEN F. P. PEAKE TO ELLEN F. P. PEAKE IN WHOSE QUIET STRENGTH GENTLE DIGNITY AND DELICATE SYMPATHY WE RECOGNIZE THE HIGHEST TYPE OF WOMAN FRIEND AND TEACHER Dedication 190S Quiver ' i i Member ol Faculty from 1895 to 1936 IIn Memoriam "Thoy are not doad who live In hearts thoy loavo bohind, In those whom thoy havo blessed Thoy llvo a lifo again. And shall live through the years Eternal life, and grow Each day more beautiful As time declares their good. Forgets tho rest, and provos Their immortality." Miss Ellen F. P. Peake, beloved teacher of the Oshkosh State Teachers College, passed away at her home. Friday, February, the twenty-fifth, nineteen hundred forty-four. The service was read on Sunday afternoon, February the twenty-seventh, and a memorial rite of commitment was given later at a rural cemetery of Fredericton, New Brunswick, where her family lies buried. Miss Peake was born in England, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Peake. She came in childhood with her parents to Canada and received her early education in the schools of that country. In 1892, the University of New Brunswick conferred on her the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and in 1929, the degree of Master of Arts. She also studied in her chosen field at Columbia University. Miss Peake began her teaching in Canada and entered Wisconsin as an educator in the Oconto High School. She joined the faculty of the Oshkosh Normal School in 1895 as a teacher of English Literature. Her tenure continued under the administrations of the five Presidents of the College until her retirement in 1936. To the school she contributed a devoted professional skill and a rare integrity. She organized the Browning Club in the spring of 1898, and the motto of the club, "The best of life is yet to be", bespeaks a principle of her thought. For many years, she served as adviser to the Alethean Society, and her gifts of red roses added to the joy of the group. To the Library of the College, she presented a collection of children's books written during the nineteenth century. To the Alumni Association, she has bequeathed the sum of two thousand dollars to be held in Trust as a "Saint George Scholarship". The income from this sum will be paid annually to the two sophomore girls having the highest standings in English. It is fitting that mention be made of the esteem of the Oshkosh community for the gifted professional family that lived and worked so many years in the city. A sister. Miss Marion Peake, taught in the Oshkosh High School, and a brother, Dr. Edgar Peake, was a member of the medical profession of the city. Their home held welcome and goodness for neighbors, friends, little children, helpers, former students, and faculty associates. The successes of others brought rejoicing in that home, and many small incidents of daily life were translated into happiness. The community expressed its appreciation through countless acts of thoughtfulness and kindness to the members of this household. In June. 1919, a bronze bust of the first President of the School was unveiled in the College Library. A feature of the program was a beautiful poem written by Miss Peake in honor of President George Albee. After the passing of a quarter of a century, it again appears as appropriate to inscribe her tribute. THE MASTER 'Sunday. Loyal to his memory, truo to his commands. Under his banner, still "the old Guard stands." His presence fills this room, our momories thrill. And ho. though ever absent, is with us still." — Ellon F. P. PeakeIn Memoriam Dr. Hilda Taylor, whose death on May 4, 1944. brought us a great sense of loss, came to Oshkosh State Teachers College in 1928, bringing to her work here the benefits of a fine background of educational experience and training. A graduate of Lenox College, in Iowa, she received her master's degree from the University of Iowa and her doctorate from the University of Chicago. Prior to coming to Oshkosh, she had taught at Jamestown College, in North Dakota, and for ten years in the department of English at the University of Iowa. Upon her arrival at Oshkosh, Dr. Taylor showed an active interest in the social life of the college. She served as adviser to Kappa Gamma for six years and for five years as adviser to Delta Phi. In 1932 she established the Wilton Club, to promote interest in literature and creative writing. For fourteen years prior to her death, she served as literary adviser to The Quiver, the college yearbook; and for many years was a faculty member of the Inter-Society Council. The interests and services of Miss Taylor extended beyond the classroom and the campus. She was for a period president of the local branch of the American Association of University Women. She likewise served as president of the local unit of the Association of Wisconsin Teachers Colleges. On several occasions she attended national conferences of the National Association of Teachers of English and the American Philological Society, organizations of which she was a member. On three occasions during her life. Miss Taylor made literary pilgrimages to England. In recent years she studied at the Huntington Library, famous for its Shakespeare collection, and at the Bread Loaf School for creative writing, in Vermont. She knew that the scholarly life means constant quests. And her many academic quests brought valuable information and insights to her classes. Despite much contact with literary history and the thought of early periods. Dr. Taylor never lost touch with the life of the frontier America from which she sprang. Her earliest teaching, as she was fond of recalling, was in small Iowa. Minnesota, and Dakota communities. Her father was for years a vigorous teacher in Jamestown College while it was very close to the Dakota frontier tradition. No restrictions or discouragements were too great while able young people were eager to learn, even amidst many hardships. Something of this spirit of her father. Hilda Taylor always sustained. Though she believed strongly in the traditions of the culture of Western Civilization stemming from Greece, she had historical sense enough to know that culture cannot be borrowed, that it can never be bought, that it must always be built by believers in men in response to their deepest needs. As a teacher of English, Dr. Hilda Taylor will be remembered as wishing to see manifested in work the discipline of finished details, a valuable discipline in a high-tempo period in which, in life as in literature, quick effects have been more often prized than the inevitably slow growth of human powers. She will be remembered, moreover, for her historical overview of the whole stream of English and American literature. She knew many periods and trends well, and this range of contacts lent catholicity and poise to her literary judgments.DR. HILDA TAYLOR Member oi Faculty from 1928 to 1914 Because of having known her, we are kinder in our judgments; we have greater understanding of the infinite detail of research; we have a clearer understanding of the complexities about us; we are more cpiiet in our courage; we are more helpful to our fellowman, and walk more humbly before God.FORREST R. POLK PRESIDENTThe Pollock House Education for Casting Victory Those who would gladly have learned the w ays of peace have, of necessity, learned the ways of war; young people are not much interested in books and the wisdom of the past when action on hundreds of fronts calls. They have responded; therefore, colleges have feu to teach. That education and training have saved us as a nation but feu would deny, for they have made our youth adaptable and trainable, and they have held up for guidance much of the idealism and knowledge w hich steel a nation to do and to suffer. Although education is a life-long process, it must start somewhere, sometime. Teachers are required by the learning process, and our concern is that teachers adequately prepared in all respects he available for the sake of the children of today and the civilization of tomorrow. We shall attain victory in this war; we may he more fortunate in making a durable peace than formerly, but victory in life comes only through living and acting justly, reverently, humbly, productively, culturally, and understanding . Ten years ago thore were more graduates from all the collegos in this state than there wore vacancies in the public schools. Competition for positions was keep and candidates were forced to accept positions at relatively low salaries. Every graduato in the class of 1943, who wished to teach, secured a position and many unplacod graduates lrom preceding years also had opportunities to secure positions. More requests came to our placement office last year than wo could possibly fill. For the past two years most of our young men have eithor entered military sorvice or have secured positions in essontial war industries at salaries much higher than most teaching positions offered. A similar exodus by both men and women teachers in the public schools has also occurrod. Honco. we now face a period whore the supply of graduates from our colleges is no longer adequate to fill all the vacancies which occur. Public, school systoms must now compete for our graduates. The result is an increase of approximately fifty per cent in salaries in the last'four or fivo years. Graduates in the class of 1944. from every department of the college, may look forward with assurance to securing positions at salaries substantially higher than salaries received by our graduates last year. The placement of our graduates is under the direction of a committee of the faculty. This service is also available, so far as secretarial help permits, to alumni in the field who wish to socuro higher salaries or who wish to move to a larger school system.Staff Quiver MRS. ETHEL J. FLETCHER, of the English and Latin Departments, will retire at the end of this school year. Upon his arrival in 1918 he organized the General Science Department of tho Training School and worked in it until 1930. Returning after a year of study at Boston University. Mr. Fletcher assumed fulltime duties in the English Dopartmont. Aside from his professional work, ho has contributed his services to a numbor of other college activites. From 1919 to 1942 he served almost continuously as chairman of the Faculty Committoo on Publications and as adviser of THE ADVANCE. The Men's Association owes its origin and early guidance to Mr. Fletcher. The All-Men's Dinner, now an established tradition, names him as its originator. Mr. Fletcher also worked on the Public Relations and the Faculty and Studont Social Life Committees. His enthusiasm for music is evident by his participation in the collogo band, in the Apollo Male Singers, and by his large collection of records. Cooking out-of-doors is one of Mr. Fletcher’s hobbies and he has been tho "chof" responsible for many meals enjoyed by students. Other hobbies are photography and crafts, for wh!.ch he has a completely equipped home workshop. Students and faculty will miss Mr. Flotchor — his helpfulness, his contributions to the enrichment and enjoyment of college life, and not least, his habitual cheerfulness. {47 yMusic Third Row: Gilligan. flo-porter; Johnson; Hoeffs, Vice-President; Dushonski; Anglo. That was what it was callod, the army unit that was stationed at Oshkosh State Teachers College for a period of more than a year. It was a complox organization, that detachmont, and many men were includod in it. Included in it wore the Commanding Officer, tho mombors of his staff, the enlisted mon of tho permanent party organization, and tho aviation students. Major Richard F. Hartman was Commanding Officer throughout tho groator part of the period. As his dealings outside the detachment wore largely with President Polk, not many college students learned to know him. He had five officors on his staff: tho Adjutant. 1st Lt. A. R. Cofloe; the Director of Education, 1st Lt. R. C. Sewell; tho Commandant of Students. 1st Lt. R. M. Akin; tho Surgeon. 1st Lt. losse Fuchs; and tho Tactical Officor. W O I. H. Wallaco. Thoro were thirteen enlisted mon. mostly sergeants, in the permanent party organization. The number of aviation studonts sent hero cannot now be divulgod. Suffice it to say that their number was large, and that it was to provide them with training thoy would have to have to bocomo intelligent and efficient officers and flyors that the detachment was created. Whon war came, studont onrollmont began to decline sharply in colleges throughout tho country. Clasios became fower in number and smaller in size. Maximum use was not being made of the facilities (such as class rooms and laboratories) and faculties of tho colleges. The army discovered that the colleges had resources that could be utilized. They had facilities and could perform services useful in training flyors for tho Army Air Forces. Colleges throughout the country were selected at which flying training detachments were to be formed. Oshkosh State Teachors College was one of these. Arrangements for creating the detachment at Oshkosh were set forth in a long and involved documonl which was afterwards referred to locally simply as the contract. In it were detailed the services the college was to perform for the detachment, tho facilities of the college which tho detachment was to use. and tho payment the college was to receive for its servicos and tho uso of its facilities. It was signed by tho college authorities and agents of the United States Govornmont March 23. 1943. The first contingent of aviation students arrived fivo days later. Tho studonts were taken immediately to the Rose C. Swart Training School Building, whero everything was in roadinoss for them. The training school had been moved into the Administration Building. The class rooms had boon equipped with two-decker beds and othor furnishings for the use of the aviation students. Kitchon and dining-room equipment had been installed in the basement. After the soldiers had taken possession, tho building inside bore no resemblance to what it had been in tho old training school days. Mombors of the detachment henceforth referred to it as tho barracks. The largest item of expenditure in maintaining the detachment at Oshkosh was that for food. The cost of food was greater than all other items combined. The contract allowed S1.04 to feed each man one day. The soldiers wore providod with the best food obtainable. Steaks, chicken, roast boof. and ice cream were regular items on the menu. Even at that, when it was figured up afterwards. it was found that it had actually cost only S0.79 to feed each man one day. Aviation students, like collogo students, had their "gripes"; but tho quality of the food served was not one of thorn. The excellent barracks thoy occupied and the superb food they were served contributed not a litllo to their comfort. Zraining Barracks Science Building H 56 J.Detachment (Air Crew) Administration Building Gymnasium Much attention is givon to objoctivos in toaching at a toachcrs college. The objoctivos of the training of the aviation students were clear, and wore set forth in directives from Command Headquarters. As the army put it. tho aviation studonts were sent here to learn to "understand the basic principles of mechanics, physics, mathematics, and political geography" and to rocoivo such "physical and military training" as was "considered essential to oporato and navigate modern high-powered aircraft in combat". Quito a mouthful, that. It was war that brought tho aviation studonts hero, and modorn war is serious business. To achieve tho objectives, it was necessary that tho studonts bo put through rathor rigorous training. Thoy worked hard whilo thoy woro horo. Thoir training was divided into four main phases: academic, physical, military, and flying. It was tho acadomic phaso of their training that brought them to a college campus. Thoy could have received training in tho remaining phases elsewhere; but only a college faculty could provide academic instruction on tho high level regarded by tho army as essential. Tho aviation studonts took five academic subjects: mathematics, physics, geography. English, and history. Thoy also took civil air regulations and medical aid; these are not strictly speaking academic subjects, but thoy were classified as such in tho training program of the aviation students. The students had one hour of physical training and ono hour of military drill each day. Flying was the part of their training the aviation students looked forward to most. They may moroly have endured some of the other features of thoir training, but they really onjoyed flying. It came during tho last month of their stay, and for it they wont out to the air field south of town. It is apparent that the aviation students had a full program. Ono of thoir chronic complaints was that thoy did not havo timo to proparo all their assignments. The life they led bore little resemblance to that of the civilian studonts who attondod collogo classes at the same time. First call came at 5:45 A. M. after which came reveille and breakfast. Classes began at 7:00 A. M., and except for dinner continued without interruption until 5:00 P. M. Then came retreat and supper. After supper thoy studied for two full hours in tho college library. That was the roason colloge students did not have access to the library in the evening as in former years. At 9:30 P. M. their day's work was done. Thoy wero given open post privileges usually from 3:00 P. M. Saturday until 8:00 P. M. Sunday. The students were organized into squadrons and flights. A squadron was composed of oighty men. and was divided into two flights. Ono of tho principal aims of the training program was to teach the students to assume responsibility and to use their initiative. Tho largost measuro of responsibility possible was delegated to student officers. A cadet major was made detachment commander. A cadet captain was in command of each squadron, and a cadot lieutenant of each flight. Each student officer was responsible for tho conducl and discipline of his mon. On January 29. 1944. word arrived that tho detachment was to bo terminated. As oach graduating class was sont out to Santa Ana, no new students would arrive to take its place. Tho Collogo has. on tho wholo. boon rather proud of its dotachment. By means of the detachment it has boon able as a college to make a direct contribution to the winning of tho war. The namo was changed April 30 to Base Unit 3078 A. A. F. (Collogo Training Air Crow). i $7 h U. $.
