Like an ant army on the march you move in hard and fast— As programmed just one of thousands On that day of days lines, papers, pencils— Pencils because what you write there Does not carry the weight of dried ink. Confusion, more faces— so few you know, if any A matriculated sweat of the kind numbness, Of the ant bumbling along through The maze. Yes and coming out, too A number on a card soul on plastic Nobody else with your number and you maybe don't know Or never will that the numbers are part Of a language just as valid as yours or mine But it's up to you I guess whether anybody will know Your name other than by your number. 4
