Distinguished from other organiza- tions. Fir Tree elects its members from those who have shown unselfish devo- tion and loyal service to Washington. As its purpose is to designate individ- uals outstanding in some field of student activity, election to Fir Tree is truly a high reward for past services rendered the I Diversity. In order for Kir Tree to he a Wash- ington society in essence, membership is limited to undergraduate men who have taken all their college work at this l ni versi ty. The symbol of a fir tree serves as an appropriate emblem be- cause it is particularly indigenous to our state and reaches its greatest height and luxuriousness when grown from the beginning in one place, surrounded by its fellows. Elagrace Smith, Jnari Tapjie, Rita Mortar Board recognizer outstanding senior women in seventy-eight American colleges, and is represented on this campus with Tolo chapter. Members are chosen in their junior year on the basis of high scholarship, service to the I niversity. and leadership. A grade point average three- tenths above the all-university average is required. The organization promotes loyalty, ad- vancer service and fellowship among col- lege women, and encourages high scholar- ship and leadership. The major projects of Mortar Board in- clude an award of a one hundred and fifty dollar scholarship to a worthy girl each year, presentation of plaques to the out- standing sophomore and junior girls alt he VW S-AMS Scholarship Banquet, and spon- sorship of the annual and traditional Tolo dance. Mortar Board members also ii ist at University functions whenever needed, among them, the President's reception for freshmen, and the Convocation Assembly in the spring. 32

aval club OVAL CLUB, originally established forty-six years ago on the University of Washington campus, is an active upperclass- men’s honorary whose principal purpose i- “Service to A ashing- ton. Through its symbolic spirit Oval Club has preserved the traditions, the ideal-, and the history of the University. Members arc bi-annuallv selected by the active chapter from junior men who have displayed outstanding interest and participation in activities, athletics, and in the academic field. This undergraduate honorary performs many large and small services for betterment of the University throughout the year. Among these school serv- ices are a Faculty Banquet, honoring all faculty members who have devoted thirty or more years of service to the University. This banquet is co-sponsored by Totem Club. Other Oval Club activities and projects include an Alumni Banquet. Initiation Dance. Children's Picnic, Pledge Project.
