affice af student affairs Specializing in the out-of-cluss life of ihr university students, the Office of Student Affairs is an outstanding service organization on the University of Washington campus. Personal problems receive helpful and confidential attention from the staff of experienced counselors whose job it is to help students adjust to university life. Its numerous functions include counseling individual students and organized groups, providing loans and scholar- ships for qualified students, finding jobs or housing, and acting as an information center on campus life. Data on other departments and offices arc always available, and if there is any question that the OSA cannot answer, its staff will gladly and promptly obtain the answer. The positions of executive director, counseling supervisor, and foreign students' adviser, along with a competent staff of associate counselors, make up an efficient and effective organization designed for the purpose of beneficially serving university students. They -erve for terms of six years each, without pay. Under rules prescribed the Regents, the President of the University and the faculty have charge of the immediate government of the I niversity. H AROLD P. EVEREST became ice President of the University of Washington on July 16. 1952. after serving a.- Acting President for the preceding -ix months. He joined the Univcisity journalism faculty in 1938 and became Director of the School in 194-1. When the School of Journalism and the Radio Education Department were combined into the School of Communications in 1951. he was named Director of the new School. He held this posi- tion until appointed Acting President in January. 1952. A University of W ashington alumnus. Andrr on WOMENS RESIDENCE HALLS Until C.uunnehtr, Patricia MrClurr administration Giving intelligent guidance to the numerous fields of activities at the university is lit important job of the administrators. Their various positions necessarily cover a wide range of duties as there are many behind-the-scenes tasks involved in the successful administra- tion of a large university. The fifteen men and women who are each separately charged with specific as|»ects of administration are well trained and qualified to give wise direction to the operation of the university. Under their leadership falls the comprehensive responsibility of maintaining and improving the financial, physical and educational well being of the university and it- students. Financial control is vested in the comptroller, the assistant comptroller, the registrur. and the purchasing agent, while other administrators handle the physical aspects of the university. Such physical aspects are controlled by the superintendent of building- and grounds, ami the director of campus housing. The well being of the students is directed by the counselor of the women’s residence halls, the director of the food service, ami the direc- tor of health service. The ull-irn|H rtunt educutionul urea of administration is jointly directed by the director of adult education, the executive officers of extension classes, correspondence studies, and in-service teacher training, and the director of libraries. The directors of summer quarters, press, and office of public information and university relations complete this well-rounded force of administrators. Through their respective titles of office, each extends beneficial influence toward the major areas of university interest. o institution can function properly without a competent crew of administrators, and those of Washington arc certainly deserving of honor and credit for the smoothe operation of our university. 26
