Lightweights For the first time since the Herb Fullerton trophy was offered, the Washington lightweights brought it to the Husky lair when the ' 38 crew defeated the Van- couver Rowing Club on Canadian waters. The lightweight crew swept through an undefeated season, defeating Sacramento JC, Oregon State, and the Vancouver Rowing Club twice. The first boatload was a powerful combination and the second boat was on their heels throughout the season. Those who participated for the 150 pound crew in their successful campaign were Carl Adatto, Harold Agren, Horace Bethel, Bob Copernoll, Foster Chapin, James Dexter, Dick Easter, Karl Grahn, Howard Gepner, Theron Heckel, Ken Hessemer, Neal Heston, Norris Johnson, Dick Morris, Ed Ohata, Otto Rohlfs, Tom Turner, Jim Watts, and George Yantis. Lightweight ' s win another race as crews near Montlake bridge. A typical turnout begins ivith greasing the oars and carrying the shell to the water. The crews take to the water, hit a fast beat as coaches bark orders, and the drill ends as the oarsmen get a cold shower lifting the boat out of the canal. 209

FROSH CREW Vs. California, left to right: Neil Haig, bow; Wayne Gordon; Bill Neill, captain; Gerald Keely; Charles Jackson; Donald Wiss; Orwin Thomas; Dick Philbrick, stroke; Edgar Kerrihard, cox. Poughkeepsie Washington came in third in the varsity race at Poughkeepsie. The pace set by the winning Navy boat was so fierce that the first four boats all broke the record set by Washington last year. The Washington Jayvee boat was victorious, with California as its closest competitor. The Frosh lost a tight race to the Cal yearlings, coming in only one-fourth of a length behind them. The race was so close that the first announcement was that Washington had won, but an official announcement later reversed the decision. In the freshman boat were Robert Connolly, bow; Wayne Gordon; William Neill, captain; Gerald Keely; Charles Jackson; Donald Wiss; Orwin Thomas; Dick Philbrick, stroke; Edgar Kerrihard, cox. 208
