LUCREZIA BORI . . . To sing gloriously, to mount the ladder
of fame after hard work and patience, to lose that voice-only
to find it again, after months of silence and despair-that is
the miracle in the life of Lucrezia Bori, glamorous Metro-
politan Opera Company prima donna, who appeared as the
opening concert presentation of the Associated Women Stu-
dents, November 8.
Miss Bori was repeatedly encored by the audience, which
seemed to like especially her selections from "La Traviataf'

RICHARD CROOKS . . . Richard Crooks, one of the nation,s
leading tenors, delighted his Meany Auditorium audience,
December 6.
With his magnetic personality, he proved himself to be a
real man and a sincere artist. His singing was characterized
by musicianship and a fluent, well-schooled production of
smooth tone qualities. Crooks' stature and appearance were
quality assets in his operatic effectiveness.

PARIS INSTRUMENTAL QUINTET . . . Beauty of tone
and perfection of technique were the qualities of the
Paris lnstrumental Quintet which pleased discrimi-
nating music-lovers in Meany Auditorium, Febru-
ary 12.
Because the auditorium is too large for chamber
music, the Quintet, composed of harp, flute, violin,
viola and violoncello, did not have great popular
appeal. A
Playing intellectual rather than emotional music,
the group excelled in its rather limited field.

RUTH SLENCZYNSKI . . . Dressed in a white satin dress made "
with a full skirt, little Ruth Slenczynski, 10-year-old pianist,
bounced her 93 pounds onto the keys to give volume to the
tones at her Meany Auditorium concert February 28.
eries
Playing for two hours without musical copy, she delved i
into numbers of many of the old masters with surprising
ability.
In public appeal, the Meany crowd was the smallest this
season. Nevertheless the Slenczynski audience found the child '
very appealing and applauded her for many encores.

"Union Pacific," with a musical background of Dixie
melodies. .
Especially popular were the vivid dance of 'The
Bluebirdsn from "Le Mariage d'Aurore" and "Le
Beau Danube," the only ballet in the three perform-
ances which was repeated.
The colorful ballet, with its beautiful young dan-
seuses and the amazingly agile men performers, was
the most dramatic production of the concert season.

BALLET RUssE DE MONTE CARLO . . . Glamour at its
peak came to Seattle when Col. W. de Basil's Ballet
Russe de Monte Carlo presented three performances
in Meany Auditorium, January 30 and 31.
An inspiring theater art, combining drama and
comedy, music and dancing, the Russian ballet
thrilled the most sophisticated of Seattle critics.
Their program ranged from 6'Les Sylphidesf' a clas-
sical ballet of Old Russia danced to Chopin's music,
to a modern interpretation of an American railroad,
