before. His triumph was short-lived, however. The giant, John Kuck, a
member of the Los Angeles Athletic Club, stepped into the ring a few
minutes later and beat Brix's toss.
Anderson was a favorite to win the high hurdles, was leading, in fact,
until the final hurdle when a South African timber-topper nosed him out
by inches in a blanket finish.
Although Herm Brix is lost to the Husky team by graduation, the
majority of the athletes who steered Washington to a Coast championship
are back this year. Brix, Dean Anderson, Mel Faget and Graham Smith
have passed on but their places will be well cared for, in most instances,
by recruits from the Frosh squad. The twelve remaining lettermen are
Captain Bill Shelley, Steve Anderson, Chuck Clarkson, Gordon Dodds,
Smith Troy, Art Gourlay, Rufus Kiser, Tom Humes, George Nickell,
Fred Ross, Bob Reed, and Doane Brodie.

Brix took revenge over his Cardinal rivals b be t'

other shot-putter in the country to qualify for Uncle Samls team. Ander-
son ran away from everyone in the high sticks. Kiser was leading most of
the way in the 1500 meters, but his customary strong finish was lacking,
and he saw four rivals pass him up with the finish tape in sight.
In competition with the best athletes in the World, Brix and Anderson
again came through with flying colors. The former, for a few minutes,
held the world's record when he shoved the shot out to 51 feet 8 inches
-the best heave since Ralph Rose established the world'
s record years
