In the Varsity event, Califor- nia, winning her first intercollegiate crown, broke the 27-year-old record for the four-mile by covering the distance in 18:34 4f5g the former rec- ord being 18:53 1f5, established by Cornell in 1901. In the Junior Varsity affair, records also went a-tumbling. Barely outlasting Cornell in a thrilling finish, the Navy hung up a new record of 14:18 for the three-mile event. Not only did the sailors smash the u a f former record of 15 :40 1X5 set by Washington in 1928, but every one 0 the six crews in the race finished inside the old mark. In the two-mile Freshman race, the Husky yearlings were counting on v o u n 0 h Columbia as their strong rivals. While keeping alongside its shell, wh1c was in the next lane, the Navy Plebes, a few lanes over, were pulling out ' ' ' enin ahead, and by the time Washington was ready to sprint, the lnterv g distance was too great to overcome. With the 1928 Coast Regatta a matter of history, Coach Ulbrickson immediately set to work to build his crews all over again. Shortly after arriving in the East for the big Poughkeepsie classic, .Tune 19, the Husky Varsity went into a dangerous slump which called for a drastic change of some sort. Ulbrickson solved the problem by shift- ing his entire bow four oarsmen from the .layvee shell to the same posi- tions in the Varsity, with the Varsity four going down to the Junior craft. In this upheaval, Beckstead, who went as a sub, replaced Oistad at the Varsity No. 2 oar. All seemed to be going well, when suddenly the entire squad became ill, from bad drinking water. Several of the oarsmen were considerably weakened as a result of this mishap, and were still suffering from the effects of this illness when they went into the race.
