Up and down the field the two evenly-matched teams clawed each other
during four long periods without either being able to obtain a decided
advantage. But this time a long, desperate but perfect pass from Carroll
to Meader carried with it a touchdown and victory, 6-0. Captain Dirks,
Carroll, Huhta and others took their final leave of the old stamping-
grounds, borne high on the shoulders of their exhausted but wild-eyed
teammates.
Next year, Washington expects a banner season. Replacing the nine
veterans who graduate will be the finest Freshman material in years, from
a squad that took undisputed possession of the Northwest championship.
Outstanding among the yearlings were Merle Hufford, who has all the
?
possibilities of a second Carroll, Paul Schwegler and Frank Werner,
powerhouses in the line, Gordie Jenkins, halfback, and others. In addi-
tion, several stars will be back who were ineligible for various reasons
1 :1 this year, men such as Walt Sahli, end, Bill Marsh, fullback, and Johnny

The hattle at Stanford the next week was almost a repetition of the
California fracas, except that the final count was 12-0 instead of 6-0.
Again the Purple and Gold out-gained and generally outplayed their
rivals-except in that all-important matter of scoring points. They made
thirteen first-downs to Stanford's nine, and completed eight out of six-
teen passes. Twice they were marching toward a touchdown when penal-
ties ended the rally and forced a punt.
Stanford scored late in the final frame on two passes, the last of
which, Wentworth batted down only to have it hound into the hands of
an opposing player, who carried it across the goal.
Due to their fine stand against Stanford and California, the Huskies
were generally conceded an even chance of winning the state champion-
ship from the powerful Washington State College outfit, Thanksgiving
Day at the Stadium. To the nine men who donned their gridiron togs for
the last time, that game may well stand out as the apex of their careers.
