Carroll, Slombuugh, Thornton, .McCann
Then came the maelstrom, deluge or what have you. Favorites in the
betting, even slightly troubled with over-confidence, Coach Bagshaw's
proteges traveled to Portland for their first out-of-town fracas, a game
with our perennial foe, the University of Oregon. When the shadows
finally fell over Multnomah Stadium on that Saturday afternoon, October
20, Washington had bowed to one of the worst defeats it has ever suf-
fered-27-0.
It was simply a case of being utterly out-classed in every department
of the game. With the exception of Carroll, who undoubtedly by his per-
sonal efforts kept the score from mounting considerably higher than it
did, the Husky warriors seemed physically and mentally unable to cope
with their shifty, aggressive opponents. The old fight was there, but that
was all.
Gloom that settled over the local campus following this defeat deep-
ened into despair several days later, when Oregon State College invaded

egg and Karl Pape, also a tackle, was forced to drop out. In
addition, Thurle Thornton, who was rated right next to Carroll in the
backfield list, hardly saw enough action to let the fans get acquainted
with him, due to a persistent ankle injury.
The season started out in pretty fair shape, however, when the
Huskies pushed over 26-0 and 41-0 victories on Vlfillamette and the U.S.S.
Tennessee, respectively.
Then, Pacific University was easily disposed of the following Friday,
413-0. A
But on the very next afternoon, Washingtonians received a disturbing
intimation that all was not Well in the Puget Sound country when 'LNig'7
Borleske's fighting Whitman Missionaries held down the Husky score to
7-0. This was a real shock.
However, local stock took quite a hound upward one week later when
a vastly-improved Husky eleven passed, plunged and circled through the
University of Montana's representation toirun up a 25-0 s T '
first conference tilt.

After this, things began to happen. The squad was put through some
of the most strenuous practice sessions ever dished out in the Stadium.
The College of Puget Sound was given a 40-0 lacing at Tacoma. And in
that game was uncovered a veteran Washingtonian football player who
thenceforth became the solution to Baggy's most perplexing problem.
Halfback Johnnie Stombaugh from that time on became Carrollis first-
string running mate in the backfield.
Hoping against hope, resolved only to give everything they had dur-
ing 60 minutes of play no matter how high the score should mount against
them, the Huskies marched into the Stadium, November 10, to meet Cal-
ifornials mighty Golden Bears. They were irretrievably cast as the "un-
derdogs" It was the last time they were to be so clearly classified.
