The Mace was a gift to the University as a Memorial to the Class of 1927. The gifted young artist responsible for the design and completion of the Mace was Richard Willey Simpson, Class of l956, who is the son of two members of the 1927 Class, Carl and Doris Griffith Simpson. The Mace stands forty-seven inches long and is of cast bronze, plated in silver, with a black ebony handle. The four sculptured sides of the Mace represent Old Mill, Ira Allen Chapel, friendship and learning. The lX'Iace is Crowned by a copy of the original seal of the University, and the inscription: "This Mace was presented to the University of Vermont as a Me111o1'ial by the Class of Nineteen Twenty Seven." Cicero FRIENDSHIP i XY w The Mace has always been a symbol of leadership throughout history. Its symbol was borrowed many years ago by universities from the political world. Although the mace was once associated with mon- archs and kings, it is now the symbol of all people. As Dr. Charlotte Brown said in her presentation of the Mace to the University of Vermont last May, "The power - the dignity - of a whole com- munity are summed up in the symbolism of any mace. VVhen it is in action, there all the people are - in parliaments or in academic processionsg and when it rests, kings and comnioners, presidents and freshmen, passing by, still should see in it the goodly friendship of all for whom it stands. In the presence of the mace, each thus knows that his strength is not his alonef' L 1 3 ' .ww--H 'Q' " ' -.--W-wHfwrm'1Sr1T,1F" Q22 .,,,.,,,., Y ,: N A ' , . i M M, ,:'Ew,Qaew W,vQ2QS2iR'm EW , , ,, , ' X I ii-' , mH'3w'weW:W.y M,"'i?Y5QQ51jQf?Qx"5'f''S 92":JW:fw3jg3fw'3"w" vw qw.. Hayden The Ceremonial Mace, although a general symbol of leadership, has deep and particular meaning 'to the Class of 1927, and to all of us at the Uni- versity of Vermont, past, present and future. This meaning is portrayed in the four sculptured sides of the Mace. The first side is the center section of Old Mill with Mount Mansfield in the back- ground, symbolizing the founding of the Uni- versity, and also that in 1927 Old Mill was the only "center" the students knew. Ira Allen Chapel, symbolic of religion and spiritual guidance is rep- resented on the second side. The Chapel wras also dedicated in 1927 and was the feature of the 1927 ARIEL. Three students reaching upwards to a lamp symbolize learning on the third side of the Mace. The fourth side is a group of four persons gathered in a manner symbolizing friendship, and it was friendship which inspired the Class of 1927 to create this Memorial Mace. f ---, ,. ----vv-T.---. Wlhen we, the C-lass of 1964, see this Mace carried at Commence- ment in June, let us recall that not only is it dedicated to the mem- ory of those of the Class of 1927 who are no longer here, but also in the years ahead that it shall become a memorial to all of them. The Mace is symbolic of the enduring loyalty of the Class of 1927 and shows with dignity the love and loyalty that 1927 bears for the University of Vermont. As wc, the Class of 1964, approach our last college milestone, let us hope that our friendships and our loyalties to the University will be even stronger and more enduring than those of the Class of 1927. 16 SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Stowe News Bureau Mount MansHeld T-bar lift with the Spruce Peak slopes in the background.
