Originally, each department was to have set-up a central display illustrating all aspects of research within that Department. Unfortunately, each Depart- ment strove diligently to outdo the rest, creating such a mass of displays in one building, that stu- dents rarely had enough chance to see the others. Thanks from the student guides go to Geological and Engineering Science for their simple and central dis- plays . On the afternoon of October 18, Dean Etkin and Mr. John Cowan Engineering Alumni Association President, using an acetylene torch, cut through a reinforcing rod in a most appropriate opening ceremony. Two young visitors concerned with the environment were then given a guided tour of the displays. They de- monstrated, as did every visitor, a keen interest in and a better awareness of the role of Engineering in society - making the Open House a success in every respect .

With the theme and completion date established, each Department undertook the task of constructing a colourful, factual and interesting dis- play representative of eng- ineering in that particular department. Special themes, Environment, Materials, Transportation, Women in Engineering, and, of course, the Alumni Display were also represented in many individual displays . Last May, a Committee under the direction of Professor I. Rowe (Electrical) and Professor M. Davis (Civil) met to plan an Engineering Open House. The Committee consisted of rep- resentatives from every discipline and division of Engineering, the Alumni, the students, the Media Resources Centre and, most important, a public relations company. The first, and perhaps the most difficult task fac- ing the committee was to select a theme; one that was pertinent to the work, yet also illus- trating the role of Engineer- ing and Engineers within Society. The theme selected was quite suitably ENGINEER- ING FOR SOCIETY - Challenge and Achievement. It was agreed to hold Open House from October 18-20, corres- ponding to the Alumni Cen- tennial celebrations and the Homecoming Football Game. L-

HOMECOMING HEAR YE! HEAR YE I PLEASE, PLEASE DON ' T SAVE HIM The Homecoming Dance on Sat Oct 20th after the Queens-Toronto Game was very successful. Alumni, students and staff attended; it proved to be a jovial gathering with dancing , drinking and joke telling (and what jokes those Alumni tell, why I remember one that would make even you blush! )
