aw Library Reache I Milestone: i ' 1 Millionth Volume The Rare Books and Special Collections on the 6th Floor contain a wide range of unique and valu- able historical resources, which include books, manuscripts, photographs, videos, and artifacts. This collection is especially useful for scholars interested in the history of law. The archives include the Justice Tom C. Clark papers that docu- ment the term of the only Texan ever appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Rare Books collection boasts a very special collection of legal dictionaries, which includes the recently acquired Tarlton Library Millionth Volume, John Rastell ' s The Exposicions of [the] Termys of [the] Law of England (1523). Acquisition of this extremely rare and significant work was made possible through the generous donation of alum- nus Joseph D. Jamail. To celebrate the acquisi- tion, in December 2001, the law school hosted Language and the Law, a conference attracting legal scholars from around the world to discuss the different ways in which language has had an impact on the law. The 1523 Rastell dictionary and other important works of the Rare Book Collection are available for use by students and the general public, but because of the age and value of the collection, the materials in the collection can only be used with supervision and access is limited. At some point during their law school studies, students should take the time to visit this extremely interesting and precious library treasure. Tarlton Library is lavishly decorated with many objects of art from the Hyder collection. This col- lection amasses nearly 4000 works of art that are found not only in the library, but throughout the Law School, as well. Martha Rowan Hyder and her husband, the late Elton M. Hyder, have gener- ously loaned this collection to the library and the Law School. Long after students depart the halls of the Law School, images of the Hyder collection will remain in their memories. Whether the purpose is study or leisure, Tarlton Law Library has no shortage of resources avail- able for student needs. Students should find time during their studies to take advantage of all that the library has to offer. Tarlton Law Library -

Studying Abroad I did the London program at QMW and had a blast. The professors were all very nice and knowledgeable. The other students in my classes were from all over the world, and everyone was very nice. — Keith Cooper from England Each year the UT Law School offers a host of opportu- nities for third-year law students to study abroad. The most popular is the Semester in London (SIL) program which began in the fall of 1987. Up to 70 students each year can study international and comparative law while attending one of two law schools in London, Queen Mary and Westfield College (QMW) or the University College of London. Through this program students can earn cred it towards their UT law degree. Megan Harbison and John Campbell both participated in the SIL program. While studying in London, they were able to visit Big Ben, Pariiament and Buckingham Palace, and on the weekends their sight- seeing adventures took them to Dublin, Cambridge and Switzerland. During Kristie Diemer ' s stay in London, she got a true feel for the city She said, We lived in a flat on Soho Square, and I loved the location! When she wasn ' t attending the West End Theatre, or strolling through Picadilly Circus and Covent Gardens, Kristie was trav- eling through countries from Spain to Scotland. While discussing her coursework in the SIL program, Kristie remarked that her studies would be beneficial to her future law career since ...the LLM courses I chose (were) all relavent to the area of law in which I will be practicing.
