Text from Pages 1 - 200 of the 1972 volume:

The Story of Pere' The Peregrinus was born in 1900 as a satiric reaction to a lecture given by Judge W. S. Simkins in an Equity class. The Judge had explained that the Praetor Peregrinus was a Roman chancellor who traveled, or peregrinated, among the conquered nations of Rome to settle legal disputes. The lecture evoked extensive humorous comment, culminating in the birth of the Peregrinus as a caricature drawn on Judge Simkins' blackboard. The prominent features of the Peregrinus have come to symbolize the maxims in equity that guide the administration of the legal system. The Irish ditchers' boots on the front feet symbolize the protection of the least of mankind while the boxing gloves on the back feet caution that even the greatest of men must fear the law's power. The arched back indicates that the law is ever ready to protect right and prevent wrong. The sharp beak indicates the power to penetrate the mysteries of the law, and the bushy tail indicates that equity brushes aside the technicalities of the law and does justice on the merits. Pere' has through the years served the students of The University of Texas Law School well as their patron saint. In 1949, he graciously lent his name to this annual Law School publication. The Sunflower Ceremony Marrow of Tradition Since the early days of this century the sunflower has been the symbol of graduation for the Law School of The University of Texas. The tradition began when senior law students rebelled against wearing caps and gowns at the graduation exercises. When allowed to choose their own distinctive symbol to wear at the exercises, they chose the sunflower because it belongs to a plant family with world wide distribution, as do lawyers, and because it keeps its face to the sun as lawyers keep their faces to the light of justice. What began as a protest became a tradition. Today the graduation exercises are still informal, and the presentation of sunflowers to Law School graduates serves as a reminder to them of their duty never to cease to question the conventional. 2Dedicatee . . . for his many years of dedication and service to the legal profession 3To Know The Shape Of The Past 1972 PEREGRINUS STAFF Macka L Murrah Editor-in-Chief W. The law, built bV precedent and tradition, is the collective of human experiences. To know the past, the law of Moses, the code of Justinian, the common law of England, is to know the present and ourselves. But to know the past is not to be bound by it. The greatest lesson history can teach us is the inexorable process of change. It is our heritage. Our duty is to obey that heritage, to recognize the wisdom and folly of the past, and to seek new solutions. 4Faculty Honors 44-75 Organizations. . . 76-101 120-169 102-119 Classes 5 • fi6The Many Faces Of The Present 701 ipjD8$ Buipug-jaAa aijj 11 mm |Pptlll wiMm Respite 1213ACTIVITIES Edited By IRENE JACKSON Moses (1300-1180 B.C.) lawgiver of the Ten Com mandments who led the Israelites out of Egypt. Dean Keeton defended Legal Aid before the Regents. STUDENT COURT (Spring): Left To Right: Don Chapman, William Lang, Don Brodsky, David Weaver, Alberto Garcia 33Bauer House In February, 1971, the Legal Research Project stated that the University System Board of Regents had authorized the original budget for a new house for the University Chancellor be increased from $200,000 to $907,000. Regent Frank C. Erwin Jr. announced that none of the additional cost would be paid from university or state funds. The project was to be financed by private donations including a $600,000 gift from an anonymous donor. Through the efforts of the Legal Research Project to publicize the financing of Bauer House, a legislative investigation was initiated. In response to the investigation, the Board of Regents returned the donation in respect for the donor's wishes to remain anonymous. Work was completed on Bauer House and the chancellor mover! into the new home prior to the start of the fall term. Demonstration At LBJ The Lyndon Baines Johnson library adjacent to the Law School was dedicated on May 22, 1971. Attending were former President Johnson, President Nixon, and Vice-president Agnew along with an assemblage of state and national political figures. In expectation of possible anti-war demonstrations, an injunction was issued prior to the opening ceremonies by the State District Court prohibiting such activities in the dedication area. In spite of the court order, students protesting the Viet Nam war gathered at the edge of the area that the police had blocked off. The crowd of onlookers and demonstrators, some carrying protest signs, extended from the Law School along Red River Street to the University East Mall fountain. Although several arrests were made for disorderly conduct, the dedication itself was without incident. 34Women In The Law The newly organized Women's Law Caucus worked toward its goal of ending discrimination against women in legal professions. Focusing on this goal, the organization instituted Project Info, a plan for disseminating information to women about law school and legal careers in order that women would be less inclined to dismiss the legal field as a male dominated profession. Project Info was structured around compiling and distributing pamphlets and sending speakers to interested groups. The Women's Law Caucus continues to publicize the legal profession as a real alternative to those careers too often considered "appropriate for women." Admissions Controversy Among the many civil-rights oriented research projects conducted by the Human Rights Research Council, one of the most ambitious was the writing and filing of the complaint in the civil action Martinez V. Smith. This suit challenges certain rules prohibiting special recruiting and admission standards of educationally deprived minority students. HRRC members spent many hours in research and conducted interviews with black and chicano students who felt that they had been adversely affected by university policies. HRRC wrote the complaint, filed it in the District Court for the Western District of Texas and made plans to prosecute the case to a successful conclusion. By embarking on this and similar projects, HRRC hoped to carry out what they called socially relevant legal action in lieu of the outmoded vehicle of rhetoric. 35Visitors Vice President Spiro T. Agnew shared the platform at the LBJ dedication ceremony. President Richard M. Nixon and former President Lyndon B. Johnson spoke at the dedication of the LBJ library. 36David Dellinger spoke of his involvement in the Chicago Seven Trial. Sister Elizabeth McAllister explained the details of the Berrigon conspiracy trial in which she is a co-defendant. Former Supreme Court Justice Tom C. Clark spoke to an assemblage of law students. 37Intramural Football For the first time in recent Law School history, the intramural championship was captured by an insurgent band of free wheeling athletes without faculty supervision. THE TEAM, composed of all first year and mid law students, took the championship away from defending champs, the Legal Eagles. The well-balanced attack was centered around the team's most valuable player, quarterback Rick Wittenbraker. The defense was successful in holding the opposition to only 98 points in nine games while the offense scored 247 points. THE TEAM played its way to a two-game playoff in the championship bracket with the Roughnecks. After winning both games successively 20-18 and 14-7, the challenge to THE TEAM was the Law School Championship game in which THE TEAM beat the Stealers 33-25. Having won the right to play for the Graduate School championship against the Photons, THE TEAM represented the Law School with honor as they defeated them 18-13. They were then invited to participate in the Combined Division Championship series, and once again they rolled over their opponents outscoring the Mudville 9 by 26-0 and becoming the University Intramural Football Champs. When asked from where THE TEAM was able to draw its good luck the general opinion of teammates was that their triumphs were not representative of dedication but of natural and rare ability. Congress GR6-2282 Austin, Texas 78704 Willard C Fmkelstein Director Dean Keeton lectures bar review participants. The Lecturers at the Institute for Texas Bar Review, Inc. are distinguished professors of law from the Texas Law Schools who lecture on each of the subjects covered on the Texas Bar. The unique aspects of Texas law are emphasized in the context of a complete, systematic coverage of each Bar course, topic by topic. Special emphasis is given to those legal problems which the Bar Examiners have considered important in past years, and to those which appear most important and timely now. The lectures plus the outlines and study materials are designed as a unit to give comprehensive coverage of the various subjects given on the Bar. The aim of the Institute is to give the student a clear understanding of the essentials of each Bar course, to sharpen his comprehension of important problem areas, and to tie together all of the Law School courses found on the Bar. The Institute Outlines are prepared by its Faculty members and without question represent the finest material of this sort available to the student. In addition they are supplemented and brought up to date each session by the Institute Faculty. In this manner, the student may be confident of skillful and competent direction in his Bar preparation, with due attention to all recent legislation and new cases. The people who know. Under the rotosphere, you’ll find Austin’s oldest bank. In the same location is Austin’s largest bank, and its most progressive bank. They all go under the name of Austin National. So for the usual banking services, plus expert personal or business financial consultation by the people who know... See the professionals! The 'AUSTIN National at Sth 477-6411 Member FDIC Bank r 191Those Were The Days The PEREGRINUS has ended another foray into the past in quest of the people and events who gave shape and definition to the 1971-72 school year at the University of Texas School of Law. The Pere' has attempted to extend its coverage to include as many individuals, groups, and occurences as possible within the confines of our limited funds and time. New this year is the coverage of the 1971 Law Week, 1971 spring commencement, and visiting summer professors. But the Pere' is not without its dropouts. For the first time in its history, the PEREGRINUS did not have the Portia feature, in response to the sentiments expressed by the students in a 1971 spring referendum. The most unfortunate ommission, however, was one the book suffers every year-underrepresentation in the class section. The class section represented less than 50% of the student body, but since representation is on a voluntary basis. little can be done about it on our part Stylistically, the PEREGRINUS has continue the trend set in the 1971 book. The technica assistance that we acquired upon our association witf Texas Student Publications has been instrumental ir updating the style of the Pere' to conform with current trends in yearbook layout and in bringing tht much-needed page-to-page consistency to the book. I our relationships hold, the PEREGRINUS shoulc continue to innovate and concomitantly to improve As we close this year, we would like to say tha-"those were the days" as we of the 1972 PERE GRINUS staff saw them and in making this modes-record of them, we are certain that they will neve: end.
