In the first place, the construction of three classroom buildings t o the west of the Law Building posed difficulties for faculty and students alike because of the noise, dust, and other inconviences resulting from this activity. To most of us this has become a little more bearable because of the realization that the Administration has at long last concluded to construct a new Law Bu i Id i ng at an approximate cost of $3,000,000, the construction to begin in the summer of 1951 or as soon thereafter as world conditions will permit. Realizing this difficulty, you and your student officials have coope rated magnificiently, and I believe that we have successfully carried on the work of the Law School. At the time of t h e writing of this letter, it appears that the other reason may result in more serious difficulties than those anticipated, and very soon a declaration of a national emergency may be necessary. If so, what the future will hold for you, as indeed, for this nation, is anybody’s guess. No doubt, very soon after, if not before, the end of the school year many of you will be in some branch of the armed services, and many for the second time within a ten-year period. Regardless of this fact, it has been, and will continue to be, my desire for this Law School as well as others to continue as best it can in the accustomed path to the end that you and others of the legal profession may keep alive the torch of freedom, sot hat government “of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from the earth." I believe Peregrinus has fulfilled the highest expectations of its founders. Without the full support of the student body such a project would be impossible, but we have had that support. Many whose names are not given above have helped immensely; so I will say to all who have had a part in this project, "Thanks from Peregrinus.” EditorGeorge E. The Association was organized to direct the efforts of the students of the School of Law toward worthy ends. It promotes cooperation between students and faculty and encourages the association of students with members of the legal profession. BOARD OF GOVERNORS George E. Hildebrand, and Leon Green to publish a legal periodical for the benefit of the students and faculty of the Law School of the University of Texas and of the Bar of Texas. Since the publication of the first issue in December of that year, the Review has achieved a high place in the field of legal periodicals. It is devoted to scholarly articles of general and local legal subjects and to notes and comments on recent decisions of courts. These notes and comments are prepared by law students who are members of, or candidates for membership on, the editorial board. This work is supervised by the student officers of the board in consultation with the faculty. Members of the student board are selected by the faculty.Order of Coif The Order of the Coif is an honorary legal fraternity having chapters in top-flight law schools over the country. and a host of distinguished lawyers on its roster. Members are chosen from the ten per cent of each senior class who attain the highest rank in law school work and. in addition, are required at Texas to have performed outstandingly on the Law Review. Each year one honorary member may be named by the Chapter; the most recently installed members at Texas are Chancellor James P. Hart and Mr. Justice Tom Clark. These choices are in the best tradition of the Order, since it takes its name from a respected body of English lawyers who for generations staffed the courts of England and shaped her common law. Hart Bob Anderson David Ball Bob Lindsey Jack Roach James GrayThe Hildebrand Competition In the fall, a record number of forty-six students participated in the Hildebrand Moot Court Competition. Named for the late Dean Ira P. Hildebrand, the competition supplements student classroom work by providing a legally instructive, extracurricular activity which gives participants both training and practical experience in legal research, appellate argument, and brief writing. The quality of the work and the enthusiasm shown by the contestants made this year's competition the most succe sful since moot court work was first begun in the law school. The competition was established by the students of the School of Law, and is operated by a board of student managers under the supervision of a Faculty Adviser. In addition to cash awards, finalists and semi-finalists become eligible to win a Moot Court key which has been authorized this year by the faculty. This year’s Faculty Adviser was Professor Gray Thoron, under whose supervision moot court work has taken on added significance and scope. Mr. Thoron’s work included planning and participating in last Fall’s model argument, papers and lectures on brief writing and oral argument, and the initiation of the Law school's participation in the New York Bar’s National Moot Court competition. Several lectures from prominent members of the legal profession were sponsored by Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity. At that time, the president of the State Bar Association suggested that law schools generally throughout the country might well profit by having prominent members of the Bar talk on practical subjects and problems confronting the State Bar. For this aim the 1949 program was expanded. During that year, except for January and May and other months involving holidays, a weekly lecture was given. The speakers were obtained through a committee ar.d Phi Alpha Delta. The program during that year met with such general acceptance and hearty approval of the faculty and students that it seemed that the project should be continued. The series of lectures for the fall of 1950 was designed to bring to the senior law students some practical suggestions as to the handling of the problems they are soon to face. The following attorneys and judges participated: Mr. Earl Cox, Houston attorney, Suggestions to Young lawyers Jor Preparing a Case for Trial Mr. F. H. Flewellen, Chairman of the Industrial Accident Board, Suggestions As To How To Handle a Workman's Compensation Claim Mr. Coleman Gay, Austin attorney. Closing a Real Estate Transaction Mr. James L.
