Q fhe very firsf TABLE of CONTENTS Few people ever realize just how much toil and labor goes into the production and publishing of one of these things. There are always certain key people who seem to have done most of the work, but, as in any large production, there is usually a supporting cast which never gets mentioned at all. In order to avoid this, I have taken this page, as editor, to use for that purpose, and also to give you readers a bit more insight into the background and production of this book you are peering at so intently. Yearbooks have always been the sort of things that should increase in value as time goes by, much like your savings account used to before you got yourself into this school. Although you may not see any need right now to record everybody's ugly mugs - both friend and foe, student and teacher, secretary and boss - since you see each other every day, many of you will hopefully look back through this book in future years and remember not only events which are recorded herein, but also people. Some of the people you see today may not be around next year. lln the express case of students, those you see today may not be around TOMORROWII In any event, we have tried to present to you a book full of faces, garnished with a slight amount of slapstick, a lot of sarcasm, a fourth ofa cup of B.S., and a dash of salt. We hope that as you thumb through this book you will want to go back through again and read the writing next time! Ilf this IS your second time through, please disregard the previous sentence.l We did not intend to enrage anyone, pick on anyone in particular, or hurt anyone's feelings. We hope that you will take the sarcastic humor for what it is, and not as a serious iab at anyone or anything. The section editors exercised almost complete control over the material in their sections, and, although I did not agree with or condone some of the things that appear therein, I should accept the responsibility for it being there - but I won't. Since we don't have a Complaints Department established yet, though, please come to me about anything you consider specifically tasteless. Although I handle only the compliments, I will gladly direct you to the responsible party. Before I get any farther, a brief history of this "Fang" in your hands is in order. The 1976-77 year marked the beginning of many things here. The student body is beginning to show strength in its numbers, especially as its numbers increase. The idea for a yearbook evolved directly from the new Student Council, founded in the Spring of '77. We therefore first thank them for their enthusiasm and support. This book did not come into being until March, 1977. We were determined to have a yearbook this year, so Marc Yasoni, Phil Doleac, and I began furiously taking pictures, and with a little extra help from Mickey Macaluso, Scott Berry, and Kaye Peterson, in two months' time we had taken the equivalent of about IOOO pictures, of which approximately half appear on the pages of this book. I spent the first half of my summer processing film and printing all these pictures in Kaye's darkroom, using mostly Andy Pickens' equipment. Once the pictures were all printed, the staff began putting the book together. Tom Glass, Jim Flaggert, and Carl Chilton all had never worked on a yearbook before, but all three did exceptional iobs with their respective sections. Tom would like to thank the UCLA yearbook he borrowed from Dr. Snyder for providing him with "original" material during creative lapses. I am especially grateful to Clyde and Betty Yost for all the work they did on the faculty section and other drudgery work. Without them, we would still be only half-finished. Jim West spent a lot of time on his section, and Roy D. Smith provided much of the copy you will read in the Faculty and Sophomore sections. Special thanks to Jim Anderson of Taylor Publishing Co. It was due to him that the cover is so nice, and his "special" deadline I"whenever you finish it"l and overall support of our venture make us sure we will work with him for some years to come. And last, but certainly not least, I would like to thank my wife, who never could understand why I spent so much time on this crazy damn thing lbut then, neither did Il. She, more than anyone else, was glad to see it go to the publisher so that she could regain a husband. The general concensus of the staff is that this is our best effort. None of us wanted to sign our names to a mediocre publication, and we all worked hard to satisfy you and ourselves. Thanks for buying the first volume of the "Fang," for without you readers, and your support and encouragement, it would not have been worth a dime. Nothing else receives as much advance publicity as the State Board Exams. Even the Freshmen are well-acquainted with the numerous horror stories told by veterans and students alike. But in actuality, not only the State Boards, but everything concerning this school directly involves the State Board of Dental Examiners, and W their staff. Although the main office is in Austin, these men are from all different regions of the state. They are charged with the task of making sure the quality of practicing dentists in the state of Texas is upheld. lBelieve it or not, they were all dental students themselves oncell These men are chosen to their positions because they are leaders in the profession of Dentistry, as well as in their many personal endeavors, and they are giving of themselves in hopes of carrying the profession to greater heights. We are proud to present them as a part of the first edition ofthe "Fang," and hope that they will continue this association in future years. iw 1 X gs- Y. M95 .,. I- mi' CLASS of 1977 3 A I 2? Karen says she is seriously thinking about retiring as a student but will decide when she receives her grades. After succumbing to the corrupt and vile ways of her colleagues she became quite militant as a senior and changed her name to Kareen Abdul Boselt. Dr. Boner with his waxing techniques achieved recognition early and used it all up. Known as lil Captain wax he was famous for his anatomical wax-up of Mt. There he honed down his skills at procrastination into not iust an art but a science. He plans to go into private practice where his main goal will be to reset anterior teeth for his denture patients. TIMOTHY W. BRANN, D.D.S. Tick always seemed to get the most out of lectures with his perpetual "Brann questions." Tim still denies that any part of his question-asking arm is bionic. Throughout school Tim's motto has always been, "Slow and steady wins the race." He set out to prove it and did. lBarelyl. Using reduced blood volume as a general anesthesia technique on his patients, "Snap and Flap" set new records for most rubber base impressions in one year. Joe's main concern through the years has been to generate as much adrenaline as possible "just in case l run short someday." Joe was known as one of the Hyper-Brothers in earlier years. Phil went denture happy for a while and even achieved balanced occlusion on his stage board patient's castings. He will always be remembered for his class spirit and his premade wax pontics. JOSEPH V. DUFRESNE, D.D.S. Joe is another of those who have been fruitful and multiplied while in dental school. Joe's big chal- lenge while in school has been replacing his lost and stolen instruments. Once, he was seen carrying his dental chair on his back into his operatory after 1, he mislaid it in the lab. Ui , I Mad dog taking aim at Yhe senior year,forisi1a1an old insiructor?i " Nw X, 44 , 23 CLASS 1979 Quite apart from freshman paranoia and the ridiculous amount of material students were required to assimilate during their first year, the sophomore year promised relevancy in the form of dental technique courses and a brief but invaluable exposure to the clinic and real patients. With the rigors of bending wires, carving cadavers, setting teeth, and waxing crowns, and frameworks, there evolved a "grin and bear it" attitude, although during the biannual blitzkrieg of final exams morale was typically non-existent. Fixed Prosthodontics, Orthodontics and Pedodontics were courses most indicted for bru- tality. All night casting marathons, Hitchcock's multiple "shot in the dark" quizzes and the precision prepping of Viade Margarine Models did little to endear these departments to the class. The Chi- nese Fire Drill Award went to Endodontics for its lab projects man- agement, an award whose merit to which many a sophomore who ended each lab session with bent files, innumerable x-rays and ZOE in his hair will no doubt testify. For the first large class in this dental school's short history each day was a new adventure. Erratic instruction and communication breakdowns occasionally disrupted the norm, igniting controversy and undermining apathy. Futher- more, while suffering together this past year through such various and sundry horrors as complete practicals, indirect vision, Pathol- ogy lectures and crown and bridge projects, a certain comraderie developed despite the widely variant backgrounds, interests and beliefs that comprise the class. Looking forward, and following a much needed reprieve called summer vacation, the chances for a successful campaign in the iun- ior clinic are optimistic. Judging from the number of missed blocks, flustered sophomores and irate instructors observed this past spring we need at least to be optimistic. Most of us entered dental school in August with feelings of accomplishment and apprehension. We were glad to be here but we really did not know what to expect. We probably spent more time studying this year than we had ever spent in the past. Credit should be given to Mickey Macaluso for helping most of us to main- tain at least some degree of sanity. His organization of the Wurst- fest trip, the softball league, and the coast trip were a welcome relief to the monotony of studying for a large part of the class. School got off to a quick start with Gross lab on the first day. The following days brought courses such as Micro-Anatomy, Biochemis- try, Dental Anatomy, and such killers as Dental History and Preven- tive Dentistry. The second semester brought Head and Neck Anat- omy, Neuroscience, Physiology and everybody's favorite, Pathol- ogy, with Dr. Bickley. Everyone is looking forward to next year when, hopefully, we will get some material that can be put to prac- tical use later on. The first dental hygiene class of the Uni- versity of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio experienced many up-and- downs as do all first classes. However, the maior consensus at the end of the first year was that the instructors had done a great job of initiating a superior program of dental hygiene. As key members of the Dental Health Team, these technicians work from prescriptions provided by the dentist to fabricate appliances used to replace or restore natural teeth that have been lost to disease or accident. These appliances include dentures, both full and partial, inlays, crowns, bridges, maxillofacial prostheses, and orthodontic appliances, such as braces and retainers. Editor's note: We sincerely apologize to the lab techs for failing to include pictures, etc. at their activities this year, due to lim- ited time and limited manpower, but this problem will be alleviated in time for the 1978 FANG. Being that it is mainly concerned with the Senior student, and in lieu of the fact that it has already begun bol- stering its ranks for the large Class of '79, the department has taken to loaning its members to other departments in need of extra manpower at the present time. These "mercenary" instructors are well-known to freshman and sophomore students as the ones who, when confronted with a seemingly unfair grade on a proiect, will reply, "You'll have to ask Dr. so-and-so, I'm only on loan to this department." ln spite of this, and even considering the mysterious fact that Seniors are not inclined to discuss the habits of this department with anyone, the General Practice faculty continues to be one of the consistent favorites among dental students. f ..... Harkening back to the criteria expressed in our manuals, we quickly discovered the exacting, albeit, subiective, nature of G. V. Black's criteria for cavity prepa- ration. A dedicated and experienced staff guides us through this most important phase of our training. ln addition, "kamp kutta preppa" looms threateningly in our midst for further impetus. Most students are quick to agree that this department is perhaps the most fair and conscientious of all the dental departments, though, which is especially fortunate since this is considered the "bread-and-butter" phase of dentistry. was-.., of Dr. John Boynton Dr. A. Not content with slashing for cash, the department requires students to master both the theory and practice or restoring and maintaining the supporting structures of the teeth in optimum health. ln addition the Periodontics curriculum allows students to perform more surgical procedures than nearly any other dental school in the coun- try. PROSTHODONTICS The thrill of victory and the agony of defeat are rarely experi- enced elsewhere in dental school as often as in Prosthetics. Pitfalls such as casting failures and warping acrylic resin are too numerous and reams of cryptic criteria nearly insurmountable. Nevertheless, most of the instructors as well as the students survived this year's carnage, and agreed that it was both a worthwhile learning experi- ence and true adventure. The purpose of the organization is to bring together those members ofthe dental profession who are concerned about the progression and quality of the health care which we offer the public. The pinnacle of such an effort is regarded as the "humanistic" practice in which we help our clients in their search for greater self-esteem and therefore enable them to accept personal responsibility for the maintenance of good health. ln our quest for the experience that will allow us, as students, exposure to these goals, the ASPD Student Chapter in San Antonio had accumulated over 200 members. Our activities thus for have been to engage in community dental health education proiects, such as the Harmony Hills Elementary School proiect, in which teachers and children were exposed to the concepts of preventive dentistry. Currently underway is the work with the San Antonio Children's Center, in an effort to establish some level of oral hygiene with the children there. The l 977-78 school year looks even more active. San Antonio Independent School District has requested that we direct a program in several of their schools based on the Harmony Hills project. These programs, as well as preventively oriented speakers, provide the student here a unique opportunity which cannot be had in the conventional dental school environment. First organized in l976 to reco nize extr d' h' g aor mary ac uevement, El Gato Dental Society bases its membership on the ability to tell mendacious stories and a feel for weak b.s. Members live by those two famous sayings, "Things are not always as they appear to be" and "What they don't know, won't hurt you." To date, all members plan to retire after graduation. This year the society attended the 52nd annual magicians workshop in Miami, Florida, where they demonstrated the latest in Gatto Technique. Many applicants are disillusioned at being rejected for membership in the society, failing to realize that this is a totally antisocial organization. The dean h as turned down our application for a "Department of Gattoism" but we will never give up trying. Dr. Richard Alley OMICRO KAPP UP ILO Omicron Kappa Upsilon is a National Dental Honor Society. lt is comparable to other honorary fra- ternities now existing in leading universities. lt was established at Northwestern University in l9l4. A petition was sent to Dr. G. V. Black, Dean at Northwestern whose approval and guidance were instru- mental in its early development. Since its inception, 58 chapters have been developed in the United States and Canada. V The society was established to promote and recognize both scholarship and character. Only 12 per cent of the graduating class who have leadership potential and are of outstanding character can be elected into this societyg so it does represent a select group of individuals. This is a group of dedicated members ofthe dental profession who are bound together for the purposes of elevating our profession. The society promotes better dentistry, thereby serving mankind. Mu Nu Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon was organized and received its charter from the Supreme Chapter on June l, 1973. Since that time, there have been I4 Alumni members elected to membership and several Faculty and Honorary members recognized with this honor. Thomas B. Aufdemorte James E. Bauerle Harmon C.
