“Practice makes professionalism by Lisa Lathen Interior design wasn ' t just a matter of color coordination or simply choosing tile over linoleum. Studies covered by members of the American Society of Interior Designers encompassed the crea- tion of complete floor plans. " Our projects are capable of competing with a professional in the field, " President Cynthia Moore, interior design senior, said. This professionalism, however, was only achieved through practice, including a portfolio review and a two-year pre-licensing program for bachelor ' s degree holders. " We have so many undergraduates thinking this is an easy degree, " Moore said. " It ' s a tough program, but we ' re here to make sure they learn what it ' s all about. Our organization acts as an educational resource of information by acquainting students with profes- sional ethics. " Students also learned ways to communicate their ideas. " Interior decorators must learn how to com- municate their selections to clients, " Margaret Stephens, home economics specialist and interior decorator, said. Members said the greatest prob- lem facing interior designers was being recognized as professionals. In- terior design and architecture were closely related, but only the architect was called a " professional, " accord- ing to members.
