CACTUS Nineteen Hundred Seventy Eight JOHN DEPEW Editor-in-Chief CANDI VERNON Associate Editor JERRY R. THOMPSON Supervisor of Yearbooks RONALD D. HICKS Assistant Supervisor ABOUT THE COVER Design considerations for the 1978 CACTUS Yearbook were inspired by the architectural embellishments in the Main Building of The University of Texas at Austin. The cover design reflects the motif of the bas relief, hand-painted murals located on the third floor which served as the key distribution point for the Main Library from 1932 until 1977. Each of the bas relief designs repre- sent one of the six governing countries which occupied the Texas territory before it was annexed by the United States, later to become the State of Texas. The cover design com- bines the crest of The University of Texas with the scroll work included on each of the six national emblems. The intricate border found on the main division pages, the sub-division pages and these table of contents pages was inspired by the bas relief decorative border located on the ceiling and stairways of the same building. 2 Cactus Staff
