Dean of Students Tries to Include Student Power in Administration The Student Development Team is designed to identify student potential on campus and incorporate it into the UT system, Dr. James Hurst, Dean of Stu- dents, explained. The office created stu- dent-faculty committees to help train stu- dents with the knowledge of how the sys- tem works in order to be effective. In this way students can learn about the administrative structure by becoming a part of it. According to Hurst, students have the opportunity to utilize the power they do have rather than complain about the power which they do not have. The Dean of Students Office hopes to give stu- dents the chance to put their ideas to work constructively, he said. Besides the Student Development Team, UT students also worked through Omicron Delta Kappa, a national honor society. This leadership training organiza- tion enabled students to develop leader- ship potential through organized work- shops and sessions. Members sponsored a day-long institute in February for all Uni- versity students interested in learning leadership skills. Seminars covered budget planning and program development. Students also incorporated their efforts within the community as the Student Vol- unteer Services Division sponsored the Student Volunteer Fair in September. Agencies represented at the fair included Oak Haven Nursing Home. Bob Hendricks, social and rehabilitation direc- tor of Central Texas Nursing Home, indi- cated a prevalent need for psychology aides willing to help with activities. Big Brothers and Sisters tried to elicit student participation. This adult organiza- tion provided companionship for young- sters on a one-on-one basis. The program required that volunteers spend at least two hours a week with each little brother and sister for a nine-month period. The group sponsored a picnic for the children with free games, food and other activities. Local business donated all materials. 218 Dean of Students
