DICK BROOKS FRANK GUESS DESMOND KIDD DRAKE RELAYS The Drake Relays were disappointing to the Steers as the only tallies were third places for Frank Guess in the javelin and Perry Samuels in the 100-yard dash. Although he won the relays a year ago with 202 feet 7 inches, the best that Guess could do was 194.47 feet. Samuels was a close third in the century which was won by Bienz of Tulane with 9.8. Marek was out of the money in the javelin toss, Walters dragged the bar off with his leg in landing after a 6 foot 4 inch leap, and Clay Krames fouled out on a throw that would have placed him third. KANSAS RELAYS Walters was outstanding at the Kansas Relays where he set a new record of 6 feet 8-3 16 inches in the high jump. Samuels placed fourth in the 100-yard dash. Marek was second in the javelin with 193 feet 91 2 inches, and Krames was third in the discus with 145 feet 7 inches. Ex-Longhorn Jerry Thompson placed secon d in the mile run. Robertson takes the broad jump for Texas in the Relays. Jerry Thompson, running unattached, wins the special mile event in the Texas Relays. McGrew of Rice wins the high jump.

CROSS COUNTRY This year saw the end of Texas ' seventeen year domination of Conference cross-country championships as Texas A M defeated the Longhorns 23-34 over the A M 2.6 mile course on N vember 19. The Aggies took an unexpected first and second place to deliver a one-two punch the Steers found too much to overcome. To make matters worse, A M ' s Jerry Bonnen unexpectedly slipped in fifth ahead of Bobby Whisenant, one of Texas ' three best runners, and the meet was practically cinched for the Farmers. This was the first Conference defeat for Coach Clyde Littlefield ' s runners since 1930, and the first first-place finish for the Aggies since 1933 when they gained a 32-32 tie with Texas the only previous blot on the Longhorn ' s record.
