1948 TRACK . The Texas Longhorn track team, with one of the best relay combinations in the nation, swept across the country taking the most points in the Texas, Drake -and Kansas Relays. But here at home they had difficulty and lost the Southwest Conference Crown for the second year to the A M Aggies. The Longhorns lost to the Farmers at the Border Olympics, at Fort Worth ' s Southwest Recreation Meet, at the Easter Quarterback Relays in Corpus Christi, and in a dual meet at the first of the season. Texas won a triangular meet with Rice and Baylor and edged the Aggies 62-60 in the final dual meet at Austin. Jerry Thompson, running his fourth and last year for the Longhorns, gave some of his best performances. He turned in the fastest two miles ever run in Texas when he ran the distance in 9:19.9 seconds at the Easter Quarterback Relays. The Texas 440 and 880-yard relay teams turned in their usual record breaking performance and ended their competition with oustanding wins in the Los Angeles Coliseum Invitation Meet and the Modesto Relays on May 21 and 22. Madsen slips a shot past Tom of Rice. TEXAS 43 NYU 45 Three desperate one-handed shots in the last minute and 50 seconds of play enabled the Violets to turn back the Longhorns in a first-round game in the National Invitational Tournament at New York ' s gigantic Madison Square Garden. The defeat eliminated the Longhorns from the tournament, but the victorious Violets went on to the finals only to lose to ihe St. Louis Bilikens, 65-52. The Violets also gained a berth in the Olympic tryouts when the Missourians passed up the invitation. The Longhorns trailed throughout most of the first half and were behind at the rest period, 25-22. The Violets zoomed the score to 38-31, but a Texas spurt of ten consecutive points put them ahead. They held a 43-39 advantage when the house fell in. Hamilton ' s clincher dipped into the hoop before popping out, and after the Violets tied the score, Dick Kor took a pass from a team- mate after the Violets had gained possession of the ball in a rough melee. Kor, an unheralded substitute who had scored but three field goals all season, dropped in a left-handed field goal with six seconds to play. Fighting Al Madsen led the Longhorns with 12 points, and Violet center Adolph Schayes dumped in 14, most of them the first half. it Baylor increased Southwest prestige by overwhelming the other contenders in the Western NCAA playoff at Kansas City to win the crown. Baylor downed both Washington, 64-62, and Kansas State in the finals, 60-52, with closing rushes. Baylor failed to produce its second-half surge and fell to Kentucky, the Eastern winner, 58-42, and was knocked out of the Olympic tryouts by the Kentuckians, 77-59, after the Bears had taken their first game by downing NYU, 59-57, on a last-minute field goal by Jamie Owens. The Longhorns met their third defeat of the season at the hands of the Aggies by a 73-47-5 6 score at Fort Worth ' s Southwest Recreation Meet.
