1 V ' .. ' Texas today looks back on one of the most amazing centuries of progress the world has ever known, for it is now one hundred years since that small but surprisingly foresighted group of farmers, ranchers, and soldiers known as the Republic of Texas surrendered their sover- eignty to become a member of the United States. There followed that decision an unparalleled era of growth and development in the four mam phases of modern civilization industry, agriculture, science, and culture. Where yesterday there stood but forests, swamps, and vast plains, today one sees great cities, scientifically regulated farms and ranches in ever-increasing numbers, huge oil-fields, and mighty uni- versities. But we must not fail, blinded by the achievements of the past, to realize the task that yet lies ahead. It was no easy job for our fathers and grandfathers to fashion the incomplete colossus of Texas today. It will be just as difficult for us, the students and soldiers of Texas to finish the work they have so nobly begun. The world which emerges from the present conflict will be ours to shape. For this reason the 1945 CACTUS is dedicated to no one man, but to the builders of Texas past, present, and future. PACE 2
