Eight changes in the instructiona.l staff were anrnounced by Dr. J. B. George, president. The eight new faculty members were: Dr. Wilbur Stout, head of the Eng- lish department: lVliss Fannie Owings, assistant professor of home economicsg Mrs. Robert C. Mc- Conrille, nursery school directory Miss Frances Sierakowski, head of the physical education depart- ment for women ,' Miss Eliza beth Mead, instructor in the music department ,' Miss Mary Lelia Gar- diner, instructor in the music department,' Mrs. Thelma Wright Skipworth, instructor in the music department: Josef Oszuscik, instructor in the music departmentq Miss Robbie Lee Leggett, Dean of Women ,' Mrs. Gertrude Tisdale, hostess of Forrest County hall: and Miss Delia Yelver- ton. hostess of Mississippi hall. Later George Roberts was added as hostess of Hattiesburg hall. Student Government activities were resumed immediately by the Student Council and its officers: Warren Pittman, presidefntg Mary Beth Stoner, first nice-president,' Elaine Gilleon, second rice-president,' and Dorothy O'Neal, secretafi'y-treasurer. In the first week of the term, the Student Council entertained the faculty and student body with an informal reception in the Social Center. Rush Week, November 12-19, was formally opened with a Pan-Hellenic tea held in the nur- sery school, and after a merry week of parties, was closed with a Pan-Hellenric formal dance in the gymnasium. One of the most interesting events on the campus was the reorganization of Zeta Sigma fraternity which had been inactive for eighteen month.s. At the dance the boys "pinned" a sponsor from each sorority. For the first time since 1942 the student body voted to publish an annual. Under a tempor- ary constitution set up by the Student Council, the officers were elected and work was begun with enthusiasm on all sides. At the end of the fall quarter Warren Pittmawn resigned as president of the Student Body, and Edna Earle Poyner was elected to complete the term. On December 10, 1944, the Hattiesburg Choral Union under the direction of Frank Earl Marsh, Jr., presented the thirteenth annual concert presentation of Handel's "The Messiah". Solo- ists were Lillian Cooper, soprano: Mattie Lois Bawrksdale, S012'l'Cl,'ll0,' Maudine Webb, contraltog Ed- gar W. Wright, tenor, and Cpl. Ira Gerig, baritone. The annual Christmas bafnquet sponsored by the faculty was given on Wednesday night, December 20 in the dining hall which was lighted by candles and decorated with greenery and a large Christmas tree. Faculty members, their families, and the student body, after one of Miss Joycie's fine meals, sang Christmas carols and heard Eugene Keebler read the story, "The Other Wi.si' M'a'n,". The first big event following the Christmas holidays was the Winter Prom held on February fl in the gymnasium. The highlight of the evening came at intermission when Dot Skellie, Miss M. S. C., and Harvey Craft, Jr., Mr. M. S. C., were crowned king and queen. The other winners of the Who's Who contest sponsored by the annual, served as maids and dukes of the royal court. The Board of Trustees of the Institutions of Higher Learning of the State of Mississippi held its March meeting on the campus of M. S. C. During the morning the Board held its business meeting, and at noon were guests at a special dinner held in the Dining Hall. Guest speaker was Hugh L. White, former gorernor of Mississippi. After dinner the Board made a tour of inspec- tion of the campus. This year is the first since 1925 that M. S. C. has had an actiee Student Government organi- zation. The Student Council, which consists of representatiees from all student groups, has grad- fually but firmly taken its place as the guiding influence of student life on the campus. Many and ,-,,,f,',o,1 izmie been its iictizfpjims, one of the most 'important of which was the establishment of a dormitory council in each dormitory for the purpose of regulating anal controlling student actirity in that particular hall. In the early spring the Vesper Choir began its annual tour by performing on week-ends in towns, Army hospitals, camps, and U. S. O.'s in southern Mississippi and in New Orleans, Louisi- ana, Mr, Marsh is conductor of the choir which consists of forty-eight girls: Peggy MCGO?lgl1 u-as student conductor and Mary Lelia Gardiner, pianist. During the year the choir sponsored sei'- eral programs, such as "Naughty Marietta" by Hebert, "The Gypsy Baron" by Strauss, and Tito Gaizar and his trou p, for the purpose of raising money to finance its spring trips. At the present time plans are being made for a Junior-Senior Prom andfor various Senior actirities which will take place later in the spring. 76 I 'Yi :J Q 4- fn 'P-1-'l 1' 3' 5 Jf' 0 un.
