MISSISSIPPI COPYRIGHT DIARY LEE ------ EIIIIOI' J. T. SMITH - - Bzlsiizcss Mfzfmyfcr' f f ya it l'm?f12ff A life divided into two parts-work and play, or as we have named it Curricular and Extra-Curricular. Work has been defined as anything one is bound to do and Play as any- thing one is not bound to do, but in this case the definition of Work must be changed. Most of us are in college to work, yet our working is not a matter of being bound to do so. We are concerned with the using of every possible means for the furtherance of our education. Most of us realize what an education is and know how to go about getting what we want. We realize that an education is not merely cramming facts and figures. We realize that an education is not merely dancing all night and cutting classes to sleep the next day. We are here to gain as nearly a true education as is possible by learning how to so balance work with play that we come out at the end of the day without being in debt to either. So, we have divided this book into two parts-the Cur- ricular, dealing with the Work at Mississippi Southern and the Extra-Curricular, which shows the Play side of our lives. To "Granny" who has been our best friend. our wisest COLII1- cilor. our most patient listener. our most understanding teacher, and our nurse in things spiritual, mental and physical. lt is in appreciation for all this that we dedicate this book to this une who loves pine trees-whose life has reflected this love in that every thought and deed points upward-just as the pine tree's branchesg that her cheerfulness is the same the year around-just as the pine tree's needlesg whose thoughts come from the depths of mind and heart-just as the pine tree gains sustenance from the depths of earth: and, whose head Imws in reverence to Gud-just as the pine tree bows to the winds ul' heaven. But that same V might also stand for the Valor, the Vim, the Vitality, and the Vigor with which "our boys" have entered military service. We know what these boys have given up. We know that careers have had to be abandoned, that dreams have failed to materialize, that homes have been broken. We know that they have been taught to love their neighbors, to respect the rights of others. to return kindness for ill treatment. to give all people a fair chance in life, and, we know that they believe all these things to be right or they would not be willing to go to the field of battle to defend them. It is with all sincerity that we who must serve in other ways, pledge our prayers, our money, our working and think- ing hours, our best efforts and our faith to those who are fighting that democracy may live. 10 .SW ?f.gSf ,."'5'V7. 1 v 4' , vue , X A ,uf Wm 2127101 2 y . f . . fjlll' pGOIf'l'lll0lf Hun. Some sixteen years ago this class, just boys and girls then. started on a most important journey-that of obtaining an education. Now it is time for them to be graduated from college. Graduated from the peace and humdrum, the joys and sorrows. the fun and frolic of their college life into a world more completely at war than ever before in the history of mankind. What will be their response to this change of environment? Already a number of them have shown their worth. The boys who are now in the different divisions of the armed forces have proved that they "can take it." They have proved that the education which was to lit them to be leaders has not been in vain. This is also true of the girls. As teachers, nurses, hoineniakers-whatever the field ol' occupation -they will stand for the better things ol' life. They will carry on until peace again reigns and they will teach their children the same principles of honesty, truth, thrift, sincerity and faith that their fathers taught them, but now with more understanding ol' the problems which arise from a world made up of so many. many different kinds of people. They will know more positively then than now that to be the possessor ot' a college diploma does not mean that one is "educated" SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS C. E.
