The division of Nursing at USC-S is not only the largest division at the campus but also one of the most extensive departments of its type in the state. Its purpose is to produce well-rounded people as well as highly skilled nurses. Each student is required to carry general subjects such as history, biology, and English in addition to the nursing courses. The op- portunity to apply classroom knowledge is provided through the require- ment of each nurse to serve at the hospital or in a local doctor ' s office. After this intensive training, the students take the state examination which allows them to practice as registered nurses. Although this program is basically a two year terminal course, progress has recently been made toward allowing credit for this work on a bachelors program in nursing. Nursing 1 26
