Established in May, l96l, the Center began its tirst year with an enrollment of W6-and this year added almost a hundred students lwith a ratio of lour boys to every girll. In the midst ol an "education-conscious" section, the Aiken Center has been well received by the people ol the area, and it has exceeded all expecta- tions in its rapid growth and development. ln addition to the "usual" course oi study For tirst and second year students-and a two-year secre- tarial training course-the Center has been Fortunate in being able to otter several extra electives, such as Russian and journalism. It is hoped that the tirst year oi nurses' training can be added in the lall of l963. 1' Nix i I i r COUNTY CENTER Even though all students at the Aiken County Center are Uday studentsfi the program is a well- rounded one, otfering time for fun as well as for serious study. The student government association promotes several dances during the year-festively formal at Christmas, Easter and May Day, with orchestral music-in the Center's beautiful ballroom. The crowning of the May Oueen and Miss Aiken County Center are two highlights of the spring se- mester. Nobody knows the results of the secret balloting-not even the winners themselves--until the May dance when the queens and other top contestants are recognized with proper pomp and pageantry. Other "outside activities" are otfered by the varied sports program, literary projects and several course-related clubs. A comfortable student center offers space for re- laxation and fellowship between classes, with popular records and a canteen within arm's reach. Resident Director Beaufort Center BEAUFORT ln July, 1959, the University of South Carolina and Beaufort County began operating the Beaufort Center. The tirst classes met in September in tive rooms of the Beaufort College Building. Since T959 the student body has grown from 70 to 2l5 and the faculty from six to ll. The number of courses otfered has increased correspondingly. The Center now occupies the entire ante-bellum College building. For the first time in more than a hundred years, this historic building is being used for the purpose for which it was built. Extensive restoration of the building is planned for this summer. The Center furnishes the tirst two years ot college worlc to students in the Beaulort area. The convenient location enables these students to receive a quality education at an economy price. To assure the main- tenance oI standards, all Faculty members are chosen by department heads at the Columbia campus. The University operates a complete day and even- ing session. In this way courses are available in the daytime to regular college age students and at night to military and adult students. To this end they enlisted the help of their own public school otticials, secured the sponsorship ol the College of Charleston, and solicited their fellow citizens for ti- nancial support. The Coastal Carolina Junior College opened September 20, 1954, with an initial enroll- ment of tilty-three students. From September, 1954, through June of 1958, the Coastal Carolina Junior College was an ott-campus branch of the College ol Charleston. During this period a thriving summer school was established which rivaled the regular session in registrants and enthusiasm. The summer school otterings were de- signed primarily lor the teachers ol the public school system. In September, 1958, Coastal Carolina Junior Col- lege became an independent institution and con- '1 if nf' rm. The Col- lege was renamed as the University ol South Carolina Coastal Carolina Center. The residents ol I-lorry County have twice shown their willingness to sacritice lor the college. Eirst, they added a new tax to an already heavy tax load. Second, they showed all ol South Carolina that they could pool their donations and raise S300,000 to get the new campus started. The Coastal Carolina Center is at present the guest ol the Conway I-Iigh School. Ottices are maintained in this building, and the lacilities ol the high school are at the Centeris disposal alter 3:00 p. m. In addi- tion, lor the school year of I96Q-63, Coastal Carolina has had an extra classroom lor its use throughout the day so that morning classes could be scheduled. A beautiful new building is presently taking shape on the I28-acre campus between Myrtle Beach and Conway. Resident Director Florence Center Stolces l-lall-Administration and Classroom Building llront viewl. 1 J y . ,ks ZW .4 FLORENCE The Florence Center stands as a monument to the public-spirited citizens ol the Pee Dee area who in 1957 approached the University with a request that university-level training be made available to resi- dents ol the eastern section ol South Carolina within a reasonable commuting distance ol their homes. So convinced ol the need lor such a facility were these emissaries that they had obtained authoriza- tion to supply temporary quarters and to underwrite operational expenses with county lunds until a state appropriation could be made available. As a careful investigation indicated that such a need did exist, the University placed its stamp ol approval on a residence-credit freshman program dittering in no way lrom that on main campus and opened its doors to 52 young people on September lo, l957. The success ol this initial year was so great that in September ol i958 a sophomore year was added with a resultant increase in enrollment to l l3 students. CENTER raising ol Iunds with which to provide lor the Uni- versity a permanent campus. ln this same year the Pee Dee Educational Foundation, an eleemosynary organization entrusted with receiving and disbursing Iunds donated Ior this purpose, was chartered, and 313320000 was obtained in cash and in pledges. In January ol I96O Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Wallace and Mr. Walter B. Wallace gave to the Foundation IOO acres ol land and an eleven-room colonial style mansion. This generous act enabled the Foundation to begin construction of a f13300,000 academic build- ing immediately, and by April oi I96I the University moved to its new campus. Since that date the grounds have been land- scaped, the Wallace mansion has been renovated, and an athletic area is now in use. Academic otterings at present include the tields of biology, chemistry, physics, English, French, Ger- man, Spanish, history, political science, psychology, education, accounting, economics, algebra, trigo- nometry, analytical geometry, calculus, engineering drawing and descriptive geometry. Bates Award in creative writing, the ff' 'arf Daf- dolph I-Iearst Award in journalism, the 'ffggargfr Wilson Fellowship, and the Phi Beta Kaooa Clut- standing Freshman Award. ln the tield ol extra-curricularactivities the F o'e'Ce Center is a member ol the Carolina League and fe dc teams in baseball, baslcetball, and tennis, frh e ntra- mural competition is encouraged in such sports as table tennis and sottball. The Circle If Service Fra- ternity, with a membership composed of those stu- dents who are outstanding in scholarship, leadership, and service, and the ETA Chi Kappa Service Sorority are active on campus. LANCASTER The Lancaster Center of the University ol South Carolina opened its doors on September Qi, 1959, with a student body of 5l students. Since that date the student body has doubled and tripled. The T962-63 school year saw T50 Lancaster area students enrolled For normal Freshman-sophomore courses. Be- sides the normal freshman-sophomore course otter- ings the Lancaster Center has an active adult education program handled through its University Community College. The Lancaster Center, in con- junction with the Division ol General Studies and Extension, also makes available special graduate courses For public school teachers of the area. In T962 the Lancaster Center, attempting to lur- ther meet the needs ol the growing college com- munity, began its tirst summer course otterings. This tirst venture into summer courses proved so success- lul that an enlarged summer program is planned lor the T963 summer session. The programs of the Lancaster Center served some 286 students and adults during T962-63. The Center build- ing, Williams Hall, is a three-story former residence that has been converted lor University use. Located in Williams Hall are: the administration ottices, the Center Library, three classrooms, student lounge, stu- dent canteen, biology laboratories, microtilm reading room, series of faculty ottices and several storage rooms. Adjacent to Williams Hall is a small labora- tory building which contains the chemistry labora- tories. ln a nearby commercial building the growing Center has recently acquired sorne 3,000 sq. leet of tloor space that now houses the Secretarial Training Department and Engineering Drawing Laboratory. However, as a result of the constant growth and constant utilization of the Lancaster Center it was realized that the present Facilities would soon prove inadequate to handle the educational demands oi the area. With this problem in mind the citizens oi Lancaster, in March, TQ63, lormed the Lancaster County Educational Foundation to conduct a capital Fund campaign with a view to building spacious permanent quarters lor the Lancaster Center. The leadership of this foundation was placed in the hands of former Congressman J. P. Richards, as chairman ol the board, and J. C. Hubbard, as pre: deft f Foundation. The actual operation and maintenance Q' Lancaster Center is a joint project ot the Dvizirx 2 General Studies and Extension oi the LJVlif?.VEiLf arf: the Lancaster County Educational Commission. McDow, and Ray Eaullcenberry, County Superintend- ent ol Education. Since its establishment in 1959, the Lancaster Center has been under the direction ol E. Don Herd, Jr. Besides Mr. Herd's administrative duties, he is also assistant professor ot American History. Lilce the student body, the Faculty has constantly grown since the inception of the Center. The Faculty now numbers 13 full or part-time instructors representing ten aca- demic disciplines.
