In fact he started out studying opera. He loved the theatre and wanted to be part of it. But before he could fulfill this dream he was whisked into the army. When he came back he worked for the aircraft industry. After eight years he went out to fulfill his dream again. His desire to express himself in the theatre led him to a job directing school plays. He would also teach English. He began teaching in Illinois, Nebraska, Ohio and New Jersey. . After years of teaching he heard there was an opening in San Diego. It was a principal's job. He came down to San _ Diego and looked over the school. He liked what he saw. We hope Mr. Giles will remain with us for a long stay. . a a Ye . By we? - a 25 oe With the beginning of school in September, many individuals wondered if having a new principal would change the daily routine. Gradually throughout the year we became more familiar with Mr. Giles as his easy-going person- ality became an encouraging part of each day. The initial hesitancy wearing off, we came to find an understanding friend and enthusi- astic leader in our principal . So, to Mr. Giles, with our thanks for being our friend and our lead- er, the yearbook staff dedicates Presidio '76., Self-expression Celebrating our 200th anniversary we think of the ways the people in our country have ex- pressed themselves through the ages. Ben Franklin expressed himself in his experi- ments and his writings; Washington expressed himself as a general and the father of our country; Betsy Ross expressed herself when making our flag; Francis Scott Key did it when he wrote our national anthem. Dolly Madison expressed herself through her cooking, Thomas Paine through his writing, Patrick Henry through his famous speeches, Florence Night- ingale through her nursing. Thomas Jefferson's way of expressing himself was in the writing of the Declaration. Daniel Boone's explorations were his way of self-expression. J.F . Kennedy expressed himself through his presidential power and Gerald Ford is expressing himself as President. All through history people have ex- pressed themselves. We express ourselves in many different ways-- a smile, a frown, a word, a sound, and an ac- tion. We express ourselves by the way we act or feel. If we are unhappy we express ourselves by frowning and or by expressing our unhappi- ness by words and tears. If we are happy we express ourselves in many ways at the same time. We smile, we laugh, we jump, we sing, and we cry when we're happy. The freedom of self-expression is given to each citizen of the United States by our fore- fathers. As students at University High School we are given the right to express ourselves in the way we choose. Some may decide to join a club, some may go out for sports, while others may decide to prove themselves in Aca- demics. We, the staff of Presidio '76, wish to show in this yearbook some of those who EXPRESSED THEMSELVES FREELY THIS YEAR, Nn a Se ee Min Fer iste ad = ie aves is re El Cid workers keep student body informed The El Cid newspaper staff works through many long and diligent hours to meet a dead- line which is usually every 2 weeks. In these hours many things happen, such as: inter- viewing students and faculty and reporting about current activities. Creating a newspa- per is an expression and reflection of various Uni students. Perhaps in the future some of these students will continue to express themselves in newspaper publishing . beat en. res z 3 a $ El Cid Staff Editor News Editor Feature Editors Sports Editors Business Distribution Photography Reporters Illustrators Advisor Photographers Cheryl Devall Kevin O'Hea Ellen Catanzaro Linette Guarano Bill MacKenzie Kevin Miller Roberta Shefcik Karen Marchetti Ernie Torgeson Cathy Jolliffe Roberta Shefcik Maria Girard Pat Franklin Jim Greenwell Karen Marchetti Greg Hazard Tom Arnold Larry Baker John Warriner Mike VanDuzer Lucy Anthenill Tracey Juditz Barbara Uebbing Mr. Danny Wilson Greg Albright John Doty Kevin O'Hea Guy Pacura eee EuEy A.S.B. Through government, football, music, art, history, and other things, people at Uni show others what they are like. Presidio records a few of these ways of self-expression. Putting together a yearbook takes many hours of creative, hard work. But, all work and no play isn't the policy of the Presidio staff. Laughter, frustration, good ideas and bad ideas fill the publications room. And the final result is another book of memories, PRESIDIO '76. It's truly a ‘creative outlet' for people who really want to ex- press their ideas to others . University's literary magazine, PER- SPECTIVE, offers students a vehicle for publishing their creative works, both visual and verbal. It is published in late spring each year. This year Uni sponsored a Creative Writing Contest in conjunction with PER- SPECTIVE. Two major prizes were awarded: one for Level 9 and 10; one for Level 11 and 12. There were also top-paper honors in each category: short story, poetry, critical essay, scenario, and article. Judges for the writings were English teachers from other schools. Winning and top papers were announced through publication in PERSPECTIVE. TRACEY JUDITZ, editor PERSPECTIVE isn't just an ordinary word. It's an expression of YOU because it opens so many avenues to life. PER- SPECTIVE is your views and how you present them in your own style. PERSPECTIVE is a free form book. He had been arrested two days earlier on a shoplifting charge and now had grown accustomed to his sorrowful fate. His room was unfurnished except fora small cot boarded to the far wall. Along each wall were initials carved by various kitchen utensils stolen by previous inmates. Words of profanity were evident among the smear- ings of body residue and other filth that had accumulated there from the room's long existence in the Garden State Home for juvenile delinquents. As Tom sat pondering at his future, he noticed a small yellowish-green beetle climbing up the wall and then enter- ing a small hole in the corner. The room gave a feeling of death and loneliness. The room was like a picture of a box with two still objects inside. Suddenly, a tightly sealed door opened and Tom's parents stepped inside. The opening of the door broke the silence like the firing of a shotgun. Tom's parents and the guard of Tom's room escorted Tom out. They left the room as silently as they had entered it. by John Warriner Mike Goscienski, President Being a spirited sophomore, Mike naturally wanted to get involved in Uni High School's activities. He suc- ceeded in fulfilling his desire by becoming sophomore president. Mike coordinates sophomore activities and acts as sophomore class representative of our school. Mike is interested in law and politics and looks forward to being a member of Uni's A.S.B. cabinet. Kathy Balsan, Treasurer Kathy feels she ran for treasurer to get sophomore spirit up in her fellow students. She feels she is expressing herself by getting involved in student government and by tending to financial matters concerning the sophomore class. In future years, Kathy may use her experience as treasurer and run for office on Uni's A.S.B. cabinet. Debbie Barba, Vice President Getting things done is a real goal Debbie strives for, and by acting as sophomore class vice president she can achieve her goal of getting things done by getting sopho- mores spirited and active in school activities. Debbie hopes to become a future member of Uni High School's A.S.B. Irene Deptuch, Secretary Taking notes, running errands, and organiz- ing materials for the sophomore class are all a part of being a class secretary. And with that closing, comes, PRESIDIO '76. This book is a collection of memories, to be signed by friends, then saved in that special place that annuals are kept. Hopefully, it will be a collection of everyone's memories, but if we missed anyone, we are sorry. I'd like to mention all the people on my staff that helped me. First of all, thanks to Ernie Torgeson, for all his hours spent in the darkroom, and to his photogra- phy staff, Annette Hoyt, Greg Albright, Cheryl Devall, Kevin O'Hea and John Doty. Next, thank-you Charles Riley and Carin Faz for raising the money needed to produce this book. Then I'd like to thank all the others that helped, Sonja Wicker, Patty Paterson, Annette Hoyt, Jacque, Schwartz, Gloria Stevenson, and all the rest that | don't have space to list here. | sit here recalling all the time spent, tears shared, deadlines met, and friend- ships made, | feel sad that the time is over, but happy that | have lived through it. .
