Frisella M. J. Christofferson Cover by . S. Pritzker Resting within a world forever an- chored to a moment of yesterday lie the gates to the antechamber of tomor- row. Within these gates is a selected, perhaps even artificial society out of which the threats of yesterday will either be perpetuated like the anchored world or turned into promises that will be kept upon a thousand tomorrows. This is a chronicle of that society — of that time, that place — the rites, rituals, and routines that shall, in time, perpetuate the threats or keep the promises. Somehow the insanity of registration lines, missed curfews, non- computed course schedules, the hours, the people will all make a difference. Somehow demonstrations, bitch-be-and love-ins, the selective service sword of Damocles, all nighters, electric bananas and electronic carillons, LSD and 11 cent cokes will work their strange magic and this “day in the life” will make a difference — somehow. . m a fWUMt film f a a Al ,J_ ' mttliUh T m „ C vr- ’i ■ ' . In this light, despite the scores, U.R.I. can boast of a most success- ful and exciting football season, for even the tech- nical losses to such ad- versaries as Maine and Temple were tactical triumphs of defensive and passing maneuvers. When the individual scores are lost from memory, the sheer thrill of a game well played will long be remem- bered. This is what we have left and in the last evaluation this is what will matter the most. 117 119 Kemelgor, L. (Co-Captain), Robil- lard, J. (Co-Captain), Thompson, J. Although the season ended upon a somewhat dismal note, to intimate that the Harriers seem to have “run out of steam” is to overlook the incredible stamina and endurance required and dis- played by the team. With the infusion of some of the energy displayed by this year’s Freshman Cross Country team, next season should provide Rhody’s adversaries with some tough competition. 122 U.R.I. 27 78 28 78 21 38 18 41 21 31 20 37 29 27 P.C. Although the season was not notable for its victories, the soccer team, composed largely of sophomores and jun- iors, is certainly to be commended for those triumphs of sportsmanship and teamwork which the scoreboard does not record. With outstanding Steve Collis, Yankee Conference high scorer, and with some good up and coming freshmen, the team can look forward to a very exciting season next year. 125 I Fordham 61 U.R.I. 73 U. of Mass. 79 71 Manhattan 86 99 U. of Maine 83 115 Providence College 56 52 U. of N.H. 58 103 Temple University 80 62 St. Bonaventure 79 109 St. Joseph’s 89 75 Northwestern 87 U.R.I 91 Brown University 59 80 Boston University 79 97 St. John’s 57 55 Holy Cross 74 66 Northwestern 65 63 U. of Conn. 80 78 U. of Vermont 56 92 U. of Vermont 64 77 U. of Mass. 72 U.R.I 96 Duquesne University 80 76 Boston College 81 71 U. of N.H. 52 60 U. of Maine 73 97 Brown University 73 65 Providence College 99 73 U. of Conn. 86 87 127 129 In what has been termed a rebuilding season after the major manpower loss of last year, the U.R.I. rams distinguished them- selves not by uniform success but rather by sporadic flashes of superior teamwork. Although somewhat overshadowed by the brief but blazing debate as to Coach Ernie Calverly’s coaching competence, the season did see a fantastic finale in the 87-86 victory over the Yankee Conference champions, the University of Connecticut. The 1 8 foot jump shot delivered by sophomore Dick Jenkins as the buzzer sounded brought the rams victory in a game where Rhody had trailed the Huskies by as much as 19 points. With fewer losses in the offing for next season, in- cluding, regrettably, the outstanding Don Kaull, the rams should enjoy a more uniformly successful year of basketball. J 130 131 U.R.I. Despite the adversities of inadequate facilities and equipment and the announce- ment that Varsity Rifle competition in the Yankee Conference will be abandoned next year, Coach Garron and the Rhody Rifle team emerged from the season un- daunted and with a very commendable record. The rifle team placed first in the Southern Group with a perfect 6-0 record and third in the New England College Rifle League Championship. Leading shooters on the varsity squad listed by Sgt. Garron were Dick Galli, captain; John Georges, Bill Rafferty, Ray Stillwell, Paul Richmond, Charles Lacallade, Don Andrews, Bruce Felmy and Jay Kap- sinow. Although the eight matches sched- uled for next season are tentative, the infusion of some remarkable freshmen will assure the Rifle team continued success. 135 INDOOR TRACK Aaronson, M., Klein, D., McGinnis, C., Narcessian, R., Patenaude, A., Skelly, K., Spinney, L., Troup, R., Vorro, J., Wentworth, N., Whitfield, P. Although concern was initially expressed over the rams’ hitting, the grief seemed to emanate more from the pitching than from any- thing else. All was not grim, however, and the professional spirit of the ballclub under the able leadership of junior Bob Mc- Kenny, along with the hitting of Jack Coppolino and the improvement of Les Goff and Ed DaCruz, were sources of satisfaction and consolation to Coach Butler, who has bright hopes for next season. 143 TRACK Aaronson, M., Autrey, W„ DeMaris- tris, W., Grainger, D., Klein, D., Mc- Donald. Especially noteworthy was the record breaking hammer throw of Bob Narcessian, whose 200 foot, one-half inch fling broke the 1938 University record by almost 1 6 feet. Bob was also first place winner in the NCAA hammer throw. The track team also provided some stiff competition for the Yankee Conference title, but again took a third place behind UMass and UConn despite such individual triumphs as the Relay team’s topping of its own record of 3:25.6 with a 3:24.3, Pete Whitfield’s winning of the 440 yard intermediate hurdle, and the conference records set by Bob Narcessian for hammer throw and David Klein for shot put. With a superior team oftentimes applause says more than commentary and this sea- son’s U.R.I. golfers are a case in point. Coach Paul F. Undefeated in eleven matches, Bruce Morin, Paul Quigley, Dana Quigley, Kevin Hoban, Charlie Toscano, Paul Johnson and Drew Clarke have shown Rhody’s superiority on the fairways and greens, bringing home a second place in the New England Inter- collegiate Golf Championship. 146 m U.R.I. Although denied University recognition as a varsity sport and despite the loss of two shells to the Thames River in New London due to violent gusts of wind, the crew team, especially the frosh crew, displayed stamina and spirit unequalled in the sport’s two year history at U.R.I. Under coach Dr. Ralph Kopperman the var- sity teams scored several impressive victories and the fifth place taken by the fresh- man crew club in the seventh annual Rusty Callow Memorial Rowing Association Regatta is not entirely indicative of the promise the freshman have shown this sea- son. Off to a mild start with a very respectable 4th place in the Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association’s Invitational Regatta at Annapolis and a 4th in the Geiger Trophy Regattas, the Rhody skippers moved up to a 2nd in the NEISA dingy eliminations. By Yankee Conference time, the team was at full sail to win the seventh straight Yankee Conference title for U.R.I., thanks in large measure to Manny Read, skipper, and his alternating crew, Mac Cuddy and Dom Quadrini, and Bill Johnson and his crew. AUDEN 240 There is a ritual quality in the chant of language and its power is miraculous. 241 %r PITTSBURGH SYMPHONY The resplendent geometry of sound . . . 244 245 RAMSEY LEWIS TRIO Music is mystery that asks only to jump the synapse of space and time SERENDIPITY SINGERS for it lavishes its gifts upon us even when we do not actively seek them. NATIONAL BALLET “Gracefulness has been defined to be the outward expression of the inward harmony of the soul. " — Hazlett 252 253 For a people who no longer can believe, not even in themselves, the magic illusion can still effect a kind of catharsis . . . 254 for through that “willing suspension of disbelief,” the ritual of pretending, the restorative power of play, can touch the wellspring of the soul . . . and make the waters stir once more. 258 DR. WILLIAM KRUEGER 276 277 279 The teacher of knowledge can direct a mind toward the grandeur of the measureless caverns and then bid it farewell. The teacher of wisdom will lead the mind there and bid ignorance farewell, for knowledge alone is but a cymbal and its discordant con- ceit can deafen the mind, but wisdom is a symphony and its humility rings out in its whispers. The 1967 Grist is perhaps the most informal Grist yet produced. The idea of trying to create an informal yearbook was intriguing from the start, and, within certain limits, a measure of informality has been attained. The most difficult barriers to overcome in this quest for an effective, yet in- formal, Grist have been the size of the book, which is too large for a small group to produce efficiently, and its traditional functions as a student directory, and a r ush and date book for the student body. The yearbook is an entirely student produced publication. The Grist staff is responsible for all layout, copy, and photography. The only exceptions to this are a few photographs which were supplied by the University Office of Publications, and the photographs of Sammy Davis, which were supplied by the courtesy of Mr. Robert Izzo of the University’s Public Relations office. All photography was accomplished by 35 mm cameras, with the exception of the color work in the opening section which was done with a 214 x 214 camera. The book is printed on a dull coat enamel paper of 80 pound stock. All the art work and the cover were designed by staff members. The 1967 Grist is the product of many hours of effort by numerous people who are not compensated for their efforts in any way. However, I would like to give special thanks to King, Buzz and Mary Jane, who really made this book possible. Hollis W.
