THE GEORGE WHARTON PEPPER PRIZE AT HOME QQ, HE GEORGE WHARTON PEPPER PRIZE, a prize of S100 donated by United States Senator George Wharton Pepper, is given annually to the student Who, in the judgment of his fellow students, most nearly conforms to the type of student that the University should aim to produce. It represents the highest honor in the power of the student body to give to one of its members. The prize recipient is chosen by a committee composed of one representative from each class in each school of the University, and in naming the winner, the committee is bound only by the qualification that he, or she, who is named must represent most nearly the type of student that, in the opinion of the committee, the University should aim to produce. The PEPPER PRIZE for 1928 was given to Verne E. Arens,Ra senior in the School of Business Administration. It was given to Mr. Arens because of his scholastic record, his leadership in student activities, and his personality. He was president of Kappa Sigma, social fraternity, secretary of Alpha Kappa Psi, honorary business fraternity, vice-president of Omicron Delta Kappa, honorary activities fraternity, a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, honorary business fraternity, and Pi Tau Phi, honorary scholastic fraternity, business manager of the 1928 OWL and of the Pitt Weekly, chairman of the 1927 PEPPER PRIZE committee, and a member of the varsity track team and an honorary usher. The Council accordingly chose ten men and ten Women seniors who they thought represent most worthily their University.
