The successful candidates in track must secure not less than 10 points in one season in intercollegiate competition. For the first time in University history, an athlete won the right to wear four letters,DeHart earning this honor by participating in football, baseball. basket ball and track. Hastings. Carlson, McNulty and McLaren won the honor in three branches of athletics, while several men accomplished distinction in two departments. Letter winners for the year 1916-17 are as follows: R. D. ATHLETIC S COACH WARNER CAPTAIN PECK MANAGER THOMPSON ffilir Greatest tletten in Amerira UST at dusk on last Thanksgiving Day. when Tiny” Maxwell’s shrill whistle brought an end to the State game, the Panther team rounded out its greatest season. It had accomplished the magnificent feat of winning the undisputed championship of the Intercollegiate world, and had at last assumed the position to which she was so richly deserving. The schedule for the year was an unusually hard one. and offered the Syracuse eleven as another new Eastern opponent. Despite the strength of the opposing teams. Pittsburgh came through victorious in easy fashion. Navy, Syracuse, Penn. W. J. and State were met and vanquished. With the exception of the Navy encounter, the scores wcrcdccisivc and left no room to doubt Pitt’s supremacy. The brilliant record made by the team can be attributed to the wonderful, smashing attack and the stiff defense planned by Warner. Simple plays, -that were certain ground gainers when carried out properly, made up the backbone of a bewildering repertoire. Team play with clock-like precision was perfected. Each man had a place in every play, and he saw to it that he performed his duty. So well was this done that everywhere scribes marveled at Pittsburgh’s interference. After seeing Syracuse trampled in the mire by the Pitt onslaught. Walter Camp, the distinguished football authority said: This team play is perfect. They arc a most wonderful team. Pitt is a marvelous combination. While the team was essentially a perfectly balanced unit, with every man a star of the first water, the work of several players in particular stood out for exceptional brilliancy. Captain Bob” Peck, for the second consecutive year, fought himself into Mr. Camp’s first All-American team as center, and Pat Eighteen
