Kennedy Education Our kindness, thoroughness, fairness, sincerity, hypocrisy, what are they but names given to the waves of the sea of spirit? Who can tell where sincerity merges into humihty, and where it folds itself over and becomes hypocrisy, and where it touches self-righteousness? When does generosity become ostentatiousness, or kindness weakness, or weakness heroism, or heroism love of display? And how often do modesty ' s eyelids fall over the glowing eyes of pride? Dr. Paul Haeder Mathematics Department The purpose of education is not to teach but to learn — the only test of teaching is learning, and learning, not just in the classroom but in the whole life experience of the person. 226 Dr. Robert Schmidt Physics Department Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. An historical survey of tine humanities can provide a satisfying sense of cultural cohesion. It can also pro- vide a reassuring sense of community. But it fails if it does not spark, at last, a non-historical, purely personal commitment of one discrete entity for another: this person for that poem, painting, or symphony. To paraphrase Pater, " the arts come to you, proposing frankly to give you nothing but the highest quality to your moments as they pass, and simply for those moments ' sake. " These are among those rare moments which make life worth living. Dr. R. L. Lane Humanities Department Dr. Stanley Trickett History Department Why study history? That ' s a good question, and there are many answers. Perhaps, insofar as I am concerned it is because I believe that, " Those who cannot remember the past, " as Santayana put it, " are condemned to repeat it. " It is doubtful what mankind could survive a repetition of recent history, and to avoid an experience with the possibility of such dire consequences, it is necessary to understand the important lessons which a careful study of the past teaches the student. What are some of these lessons? — that liberty is among the most priceless possessions of mankind and that just government is impossible without freedom; — that an ordered society results when men learn to discipline themselves and handle power properly: and, conversely, that harm ensues when power is allowed to possess. — that real progress comes slowly and is the result of the application of reason and moderation in the solution of human problems; such study reveals that leaders who set out to remake the world in an instant are usually demagogues seeking to incite the passions and seduce the reason of man. As important, however, as the stern lessons which history teaches, the study and reading of such subject matter provides perspective for our daily living. Browsing through books, often old and forgotten, helps " tune out " the confusion and clamor of our times and assists the mind in the making of meaningful judgments on human problems. " I don ' t really see a peaceful future for the average American university. At heart, administrators, faculty, and students are all people, and they won ' t always see eye to eye. Besides, a university is a place where ideas should be constantly popping to the surface — and they won ' t always be harmonious ideas. But a university is also a place where reason should prevail, and if the people on campus will exercise reason — if they will work through conversation rather than confrontation — they should make real progress. " Dr. Ralph Wardle English Department 238 239 240 Great Teachers Awards Presentation of the first two " Great Teacher Awards " in University history highlighted mid- year commencement exercises at 10 a.m., January 24.
