English Courses offered bv the Ens;li h Department are designed to help students acquire skill in the use of the English lan- guage, to prepare teachers of English for positions in high school and college, and to extend the advantages of literary study to those who are majoring in other fields. The department sponsored a variety of activities this vear, such as a creative writing contest, a series of hook re- views and panel discussions, two parties for the English facul- ty and majors, and a field trip for 80 students to Theatre ' 56 in Dallas. English facultv members take a large part yearly in state, regional, and national associational meetings, and con- tribute to numerous scholarly publications. E. S.
