DEAN WALLACE COLVARD Dr. Dean W. Colvard was born in Ashe County, North Carolina. He and his wife, Martha, have three children, two of them married daughters, and a son. Dr. Colvard holds the B.S. degree from Berea College, the M.A. degree from the University of Mis- souri, the Ph.D. degree and honorary doctorate from Purdue University, and an honorary doctorate from Belmont Abbey College. Some highlights in Dr. Colvard ' s professional career are: the professorship of Animal Science at North Carolina State College for one year before he assumed the job of department head of Animal Science at North Carolina State in 1948, in 1953, he became Dean of Agriculture at North Carolina State College; from 1960-1966, he served as President of Mississippi State University; and, in 1966, he became Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Chancellor Colvard brought about several signifi- cant developments to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte after his arrival in 1966. These are as follows: accreditation by Southern Associa- tion of Colleges and Schools and accreditation of programs in Nursing, Chemistry and Engineering; enrollment increase from 2,014 in 1967 to approx- imately 9,000 in 1 978; successful organization of the Patrons of Excellence program with 198 persons, firms, or foundations pledged to give a minimum of $10,000 over a period of ten years; the launching of a graduate program from no program in 1968, to one with 1,400 students; the addition of a new professional program in Architecture; and a major building program now valued at $54 million. Upon leaving, Chancellor D. W. Colvard remarked, It ' s been a great joy for me to be involved with this university. My hope will be you give Dr. Fretwell the kind of support you ' ve given me.
