If, P N. s ask? 5 E v HQ' " fm I 0 . 8 I is-4,5 - ' yr , 455 Mid-Term Burnout Sitting in this library for the past week with my head buried in tons of books and notes, I have come to an im- portant resolution. I will never again wait until the last possible moment to study for my mid-term exams. Like every other redblooded American college student I went out every night, partied until dawn, and generally had a good time-until last week. That's when it hit me, the "seven-exams-a-week sIump". l'm not the only one in this depressing state, mind you. There are plenty of other people around here with the same symptoms as lg arthritis of the hand setting in. We look like a bunch of zombies that just crawled out from under a million books. Every now and then, I get an urge to run outside, grab one of those scrawny, little lawn trees by the trunk, shake it and scream to regain my senses. But while in the process l'd undoubtedly think to myself "This tree, what Phylum does it belong to?" which would send me dashing back to the library to scour my notes in search of the answer. So, instead of over-taxing my brain, I just pace through the maze formed by towering book shelves: the whole time'wishing for a sudden earthquake to end it all. After a half hour of reviving myself, I return to my table and begin to read of the exciting adventures of the Pasikni cannibals of outer New Guinea. Once In a while I tear myself away from the book to watch this girl sitting across the roomg she's trying for the world pencil-eating record. Or perhaps I listen to the guy next to meg he can play the Chattenooga Choo-choo, drumming his fingernails on the table top. I'm simply awed at all the talent displayed while l'm trying to study. One biggy in the problem category is that some classes use terms that sound the same but have totally different meanings. Who's to say that a humerus fthe upper arm bonej isn't humorous? Of course, these differences may not occur to you when you're cramming for two tests at the same time. Quite understan- dable-unfortunately, exams are not. After such a fun-filled day at the library, I drag myself home to bed. In dreamland I take part in an adventure where pencil-throwing cannibals are chasing me because I stole their Chattanooga Choo-choo. I wake up relieved to see that I am no longer in the New Guinea jungle: but this safe feeling doesn't last long because I realize today is "the day". While dressing and walking to my class, I go over in my mind the U.S. Constitution, the principles of embryology, and the ways to tell what culture a person is from by how he flashes his eyebrows. And now the moment of confrontation arrives. The students shuffle into the dminous-looking room. Soon after everyone is seated, the professor walks in with his three assistants marching behind himg each is struggl- ing to carry a two-foot stack of tests. I wonder if they'Il ask us if we have any last words. The exams are passed around the room and I not-so-eagerly look at the first question: A book on nutrition by Amalia Stafford is . . .I breathe along sigh of relief upon thinking of how many hours of studying are finally paying off. Without hesita- tion, I scribble down "Survival of the Fittest". Ilzsifisfiwl . .ms I . TIIIIIII .-, N 33 v X .Vin . KJ .4 I f' ' Na , JV: 4 --' ..'D-V" "' ' -V ,, .V:.p. 4.31 ,. . What was once a loosely conceived group of undergraduate students has now matured into a functioning system of councils, boards, committees, officers, and personnel. An annual operating budget of nearly a quarter-million dollars brings equally immense responsibilities as its inevitable by-product. Fortunately for ASUN officers, the stress endured throughout the year is passing. Each fall semester initiates a new president, vice-presidents, senators, and committee representatives into a world that will only be com- prehended after its completion. Save one. ". . . For further information contact Peggy Martin in the ASUN office. Telephone: 784-6589." These lines, that telephone number, and this face have graced the pages of more SAGEBRUSH issues, more minutes, memos, and letters of correspondence than any other single person. She is the lifeline. ls there a limit to the amount of information and responsibility one person can absorb? There is no limit. The human potential is unbounded. And so, in Peggy we see a person who understands what ASUN is and how it functions, knows its limitations and potentials to a greater extent than any other. ln the last six years we have seen a secretary work with com- petence and organization, now her presence is indespensable to our operation. You feel the burden of the days. Your self-creed is so demanding because you strive to perfection. Every project you complete must be done in such a way as to offend no one and to aid everyone with whom you come in contact. The pressures are so great. And so we feel compassion. You know two worlds: the professional world that has no end and your private world that too often is neglected for the sake of ours. And who do we know? We know a combination of talent, humility, and concern-a total person who is our friend-one worth knowing always. Two teenage hookers work Virginia Street in front of Harrah's. They wear heavy ski jackets and heavy makeup and smoke a lot. Occasionally they will walk into the casino to warm up. It is cold in the street. They eye every passerby and gab with bums and burnouts who also stand around. The electric neon flash illuminates the faces of the girls. What's wrong is that the cops are wired on confiscated amphetamine white crosstop pills which were found earlier on a truck driver. Teeth grind silently over coffee in the night. An accountant from San Francisco is trying to pick up a young secretary from Vancouver, giving her the sexy eye by way of a mirror behind the bar at which they sit. She returns the stare with some eagerness and turns away from his reflection and looks towards him. He remains transfixed on her image. They never speak. They never meet. The accountant will take a taxi to Joe Conforte's Mustang Ranch and pay S75 for services rendered there. A3 n I nl, A 14 lx aim? f ,x, A R a b b I 2 e iii Rabbi Abe Feinberg sees his position at UNR asione of a Socratic ifgad-fly," coined by the-riAthenian phiiosopher executed by authorities for "corrupting the young." Explains Feinberg, "lf 'corruption' means incitement to think critically about themselves and the world they are fated to inhabit, l accept the charge." . - The rabbi, however, has not had to drink the poison cup of hemlock. In his 77th year, he lives in strength and hip- piness, able "to express oneself on the highest level of potentiality." He has gainediworld notoriety and fame through a wide spectrum of careers that include spiritual leader, romantic radio tenor, edueggitor, gyuthorhcounsgelor and social protest revolutionary. :fi it Since retiring in Reno a year ago to be near his son's family, Dr. Jonathon Feinberg of the Medical School, the rab- bi has spearheaded a movement "to militarize and polarize" thebelderly. He,has co-hosted a weekly radio program, broadcast throughout the state of Nevada, with UNR geriatricsiiprofessor Mark Edinberg entitled, "Grey Llb Plus." Sponsored by a grant from the Nevada Humanities Committee, the program blends nostalgic music of the 30's-sung by Feinberg and accompanied on the piano by Edinberg-and dialogue concerning issues of the Reno community and its elderly populace. S Feinberg also actively lectures on the UNR campus and is rabbi-in-residence at the Center for Religion and Life. A significant correlation exists between the problems of youth ,,, todayggand tbe plight of the elderly, according to the rabbi. He says they are both "misunderstood minorities." E "They are both protagonists of modification in our society," he explained. Both the young and the old of modern American society experience intimidation by a stereotype of defined expectations tifnpringed ogtthems by the Establishment. The elderly in particular, says the rabbi, are the victims of a syndrome. "At the age of 65," he says, "a pit opens up in front of an older person on the road through life. He's expendalgle, heis useless, he's not needed. He's outlived his valuein the industrial world because he's noilonger able toiworkriiar he's able to work but not permitted." Feinberg also finds it humiliating that men and women over 55 who engage in, eexua,l?activiity are5,yiolati,,ng some societal code of behavior. "We hear so much about dirty old men," he protests. about dirty young men." - I ' The rabbi has always reserved a quanity of outspoken indignation towardsnthoseaportiqgxs and inhibit social minorities, the disabled, the poor. Born ina small, impoverisheoiimlninigiitowniion thieiiOhidiiiiRivertin 1899, he has never forgotten his Lithuanian immigrant parents' struggle to provide for a family of 12. Ordained as a rabbi in Cincinnati in 1924, Feinberg soon became Qyead the Qcondgjargegst Retgrm Temeplein New York. Reslgning a few years later, he made a speech which castigated organized religionaws "a lighthouse from which the tides of life and human energy had receded." An opera scholarship sent him to France to develop his fine, lyrical tenor: this father, also a rabbi, had been a can- tor.i Feinberg returned to New York to croon five days a week over the NBC radio network under thestage name of Anthony Frome. At the peak of his career, however, he began to find it nunenedurable to sing love songs to pubescent girls and housewives." lt was the ominous cloud of Hitler's Third Reich and World War ll which called him back to the rabblnate ata fraction of his earnings. iii F iiiii iiiii llii 1 1 if In 1943, Feinberg became the spiritual leader of Canada's leading reform pulpit-the Holy, Blosspmi Temple,,,,,in Toronto-a post he held for 17, years. He resigned in 1961 to write and devote hiitime tgp promotingiiworldiiiipeacieii In 1967, he made world headlines with two other clergyman when he traveled to Hanoi to confer with North Viet- namese President Ho Chi Minh. The clergymen returned to the United States wgh a gersongl peage overture to President Lyndon Johnson, which was ignored. 75 Me' "I went as an American," says the rabbggexplaining he knowingly commited an act of "civil disobedience." "Dissent ls a form of patriotism," he maintained. "lt involves penalties and risks." g yygg ,,,, ,,,, ,.,, ,,, Feinberg condemns U.S. military involvement in Vietnam as "the worst iilundeiiillmadei by nation iriiimodern times." He adds that Vietnam is the major cause of a deterioration of American morality, economy and spiritualityea traumatic condition, he claims, under which the U.S. labors today. . Q Q gg ,Q His impressions of a devastated Vietnam are recorded in his best-sellingebooli, Haiiibi Diiy., Joining in ex-Beatle John Lennon's "bed-in for peace," Feinberg sam on the original recording of "Give Peace A Chance" in 1969. Identifying more and more with youth, the rabbi at age 70,iicut his own album. of songs entitled2'l Was So Much Older Then." Following his wife's tragic death of cancer, the rabbi left Toronto and sad memories to join the war protest move- ment at U.C. Berkeley. He later moved across the bay to San Francisco, where he resided fori4 years as rabbi-in- residence at the radical, controversial church, Glide Memorial Methodist. He describes Glide Memorial as "a congregation of people" who weren't interested gin theglogy., "l'm not interested in theology either," said the rabbi. "I have my owns lt's n t perfect. lfan't pifove it'iffefl'm nfet tryiag to convert anyone else to it." Feinberg believes in living, like Thoreau, "one world at a time." . "The only discernible purpose of life," Feinberg has written, "is not in preparation for life beyond the grave or egg- ploratlon of moonspaceg it is happiness, here and now." H The rabbi does not find Reno and the UNR campus "uptight, conservative" as he was forewarned by friends in San Francisco when he left there to reside in Nevada. Ontheother hand, he comments that neither is UNIQ "hQI5gb6dgQ6f radicalism" which may guide one to a personal philosophy of 'tiiving dangerously." mi RT wif "What other road is there, really," asks the rabbi, "to a full maximum-capacity life?" H tsszsewr " .sit Q agus 42 "FREEDOM SUBLIMEU Freedom, like a bird of noble kind Winging majestically through the air Freedorn, like the clouds in the sky Too intangible, too sublime. Yet I care. -Raymond Auyeung- For Better or For Worse Married students attempting to continue their education on the UNR campus come close to singing the blues as the ordinary stresses of personal adjustment are aggravated by financial pressures. Those who receive parental support in the fantasy land of prolonged dependency are not representative of the hundreds of completely self- supporting couples attending UNFl, of whom one or both partners may be enrolled in classes, with one or both employed. For them the marriage bed is not one of roses. Living on a tight budget is characteristic of the group, and if an emergency should arise some are forced to leave school. Restricted by anti-discrimination laws, the university can offer them no help, financial or otherwise, that isn't also available to other students. With compilation of statistics concerning marital status forbidden, there is not even possible an approximation of their current numbers at UNR. When students marry, the wife usually leaves the university in order to work full-time, enabling her husband to pursue his degree. Lucky, indeed, is the woman who can drop her preschool children off at the ASUN-operated child care center while she also continues her schooling. Ordinarily, small children keep the mother at home, and the man undertakes a full-time job in addition to his studies. Fortunately, employment opportunities abound in this vicinity, predominantly in gambling and tourist-related ac- tivities. Although UNFt's Student Employment Service gives priority to those enrolled in a full program toward a degree, whatever their marital status, spouses are given second priority for job referrals, even if they personally aren't attending the university. Most couples pay the high rent typical of this area for off-campus housing. UNFi's meager provision of campus ac- commodations for them consists of 40 unfurnished one-bedroom apartments at University Village, located near the baseball diamond. Occupancy is limited to a maximum of two adults and one child for one parent without a partner and two children,i provided that one spouse is attending college full-time, working for a degree. At a rental of S385 per month-a throwback to times shrouded in the mists of almost-forgotten memories-these apartments have a l-o-o- ng waiting list. The risk of being hit by an errant baseball from the bat of a collegiate home-run slugger is no deterrant to 100 per cent occupancy. Trouble in paradise is evidenced by the large number of couples who overwhelm UNFl's counseling service seek- ing aid for ailing marriages. Wives are frequently resentful about having had to forsake their education in order to work. "Will l ever get my turn'?" is the question that gnaws at them and, sequentially, their union. Also weakening the fiber of campus connubiality may be the wife's confusion about her role as a liberated woman. Many, surrounded as they are by dating, fun-loving unmarried students, regret the lost freedom of the single's social life, and they want an open marriage in which they aren't bound by constraints of loyalty or monogamy to the spouse. Husbands, too, often regret their lost youth, buried under responsibilities they can't cope with. Saint Paul said it is better to marry than to burn. Those who opt for student marriage and make a success of it despite the hardships and temptations to quit prove the adage: Amor omnla vlnclt-love conquers all. We salute them. 24 24 4. With a strong campus foothold, we at The Right Place are looking toward the future with excitement and enthusiasm. The Right Place developed out of the need, both felt and expressed, that members of the University com- munity were not receiving important services necessary to actualize their concept of what this university should be. Basically, The Right Place is a peer-counseling, information and referral service. We strongly believe that students can best help other studens deal with the problems and needs that arise as we all journey through this system of higher education. Academia is an important part of the total picture of this university, it is, nonetheless, only part of a many faceted picture. By helping fellow students deal with needs and problems, perhaps not directly concerned with the academically oriented part of their lives, The Right Place tries to make it easier for the individual to receive what he or she is seeking in education. The,peer-counseling aspect of the program involves the training of volunteers in basic counseling skills-ac- tive listening, interviewing skills, and taking a look at behaviors which will be growth facilitating to those using the service. The information system is a large and ever-growing commodity. We familiarize our volunteers with resources which allow them to disperse information pertinent to student needs. This may sound like an enormous job. lt is. We do little things-like having a restaurant menu library available-enabling students to check out food and prices before you hop into your car and drive around for a half hour deciding where to eat. This is just one example of the information we have accumulated. We will make everydattempt possible to research information you may need to make your life at UNR less complicated than it a rea y is. Another area in which we have a great deal of information is that of alchohol and drugs-their uses and abuses. We are not anti-drinking. We encourage responsible drinking, including such things as knowing how alcohol works on your body, admitting when you have had too much alchohol to drive safely, serving food and non-alchoholic beverages along with alchohol to reduce the speed in which alchohol enters your body and avoid discriminating against those who prefer not to drink. The referral component of The Right Place consists of listings of agencies in the community that may be of service to students. Our volunteers have gone out personally to many such agencies to find out how they work and explain what our function is. We have made at least 20 visits to agencies such as Planned Parenthood, Nevada State Welfare, People, lnc. and Reno Mental Health Center, to name a few. Student interest and input is what makes an organization like The Right Place succeed and grow. We welcome your support and ideas for making this service what you feel it should be. . Finally, we would like to thank the ASUN, The Task Forsce on Substance Abuse, The Right Place volunteers, and all our friends in the community for making our concept of The Right Place a reality. m 49 ' lx . , iczfr 41' , ll Q 4 i 250 ww Wx ww f XXX fe- 0- zgif i f 1 X. A,.. ,1,.- ,.,., . , ,,., . 6: , QQ , M WINHLER A Bicentennial Year ln 1976, a leap year, the grown-ups of America fired President Gerald Ford by expressing desire to have Jimmy Carter replace him in his job. Gerald Ford became president by replacing Richard Nixon who had to resign because the Congress wanted to fire him. Ford, who was vice president at the time, had previously replaced Spiro T. Agnew who also had to resign his post because the federal prosecutors wanted him in jail for bribe taking. The bribes were taken while Spiro was the governor of Maryland. Through a curious system known as "plea bargaining" Mr. Agnew was promised his freedom and immuni- ty from prosecution if he would simply quit and go away and promise never to come back. Spiro Agnew now spends his time writing anti-semetic pieces for right-wing periodicals and playing golf with Frank Sinatra and other Italian- Americans in Las Vegas, Nevada. He also wrote a book which was severly pooh-poohed by literary critics. He made quite a bit of money on the book. lt was a best seller. When Gerald Ford replaced Richard Nixon he had to choose someone to replace himself as Vice President. He chose Nelson A. Rockefeller who was formerly the governor of New York. Rockefeller had a grandfather who was very big, very early, in the oil business. lt was rumored that the grandfather was richer than Hearst, Vanderbilt, Carnegie and God. Grandpa used to give tips to waiters and doormen in the form of coins called dimes. He also had a very bad stomach. The doormen and waiters thought the dime was some kind of joke. Poor people used to joke about John D. Rockefeller's stomach. It was no joke and neither was he. Grandson Nelson has reversed eyesight and collects rare, ex- pensive art. This, to, is no joke. Nelson Rockefeller was not asked to run for vice president by Gerald Ford in '76 because Ronald Reagen, former governor of California, thought that that would be stupid. Instead, Ford chose Senator Robert Dole of Kansas to be his running mate. This move was considered by almost everyone to be a stupid joke because it has since been recognized that Dole cost Ford the presidency. So, in November, the election proved that the people in the East liked Jimmy Carter and the people in the West liked Gerald Ford. Unfortunately for Ford, most of the people who voted live in the East and Carter got the job. One of Ford's first acts as president was to pardon Richard Nixon. This was considered a rather curious act since Nixon had never been indicted for a crime, to say nothing of being found guilty of one. Nixon presently spends a lot of time walking along the beach near San Diego. He usually can be spotted because he wears a blue windbreaker with an eagle on the back. He also speaks occasionally at local high school athletic dinners and sometimes plays golf with the president of the Teamster's Union. Jimmy Carter's first act as president was to pardon the young men who left America instead of getting drafted into the Viet Nam War. Some Americans thought that these men had committed a crime by such refusal. Others think that they are heroes for refusing to commit a crime. The mothers of these men greeted them in the same way that other mothers greeted the soldiers when they returned from Vietnam. A peanut farmer, who prefers open collar shirts and button down sweaters to business suits, is the president. A white southerner, who got elected because 9 out of 10 blacks voted for him, resides in Washington D.C. which happens to be populated predominately by black people. A relatively unknown Annapolis graduate who did service on nuclear sub- marines won the White House from an incumbent who was never elected. Stranger things have happened but not in my generation. l Iwi-'C T773 .f , '-Le?" . - w x - ,f :E H 53--3153 Q-'?.
