W fit I Their efforts culminated in the gigantic attraction Western Day on September 29.1974. This event attracted 1200 concerned friends and alumni. On October 23,1974, the governor's Commission on Post Secondary Education decided that Western should not be closed. The hard work paid off at least temporarily. Enrollment and new programs remained critical to the college's continued existence. We here at Western owe a great deal to those who chipped in when the chips were down. This annual, on behalf of all students of Western, would like to take this opportunity to thank them. 3

The governor's Commission on Post Secondary Education recommended in June 1974 that Western Montana College be closed on the basis of projected declines in the number of education students in the University system, and in the number of college students generally. The closure of Western would save money. Does a person's mind have a price tag on it'’ Western Montana College and Dillon said no! Directing the efforts to save Western were WMC officials — Short, Tash, Stish, Anderson, Stauffer, and many others, together with Bruce Watters, head of SOC (Save Our College — a hard working group of volunteers), and Joyce Keltz and Clarice Walters, co-chairmen of WOW (Women of Western — an enthusiastic and productive organization), and Western alums. All in all, there were 16 committees, chairmaned by civic leaders and staffed with hundreds of personnel. 2 YkV
