T I 1958 Dental education in Kansas City began in 1881 with the founding of the Kansas City Dental College. After a brief residence at the Kansas City Medical College it moved to the fifth floor of the YMCA building. In 1893 the Kansas City Dental College moved to a new location at Tenth and Troost. In 1890, a second dental school was formed in Kansas City, the Western Dental College. In 1919 these two schools merged as the Kansas City-Western Dental College and in 1923 moved into their new clinic building fthe one we now occupyj and their old building across the street was converted into the administration building. In 1926, KC-Western became part of the Lincoln and Lee University and later in 1932 became the property of the University of Kansas City. Then, in 1963, the University of Kansas City became the Kansas City branch of the University of Missouri and our school became known as the UMKC School of Dentistry. Anatomy lab won't ever be the same as it was around the turn of the century. The print-out indicates that you apparently don't know where the children,s clinic is. Stewart Coordinator of Research Projects DENTAL RESEARCH The UMKC School of Dentistry has a large and outstanding research program. This program underway for . . . h. le many years in the old building now takes on a new look. Dr. Jack L. Stewart coordinates t is comp X research program for Dean Hamilton B.G. Robinson. Under their direction and supervision intensive research activities take place in various phases of clinical and laboratory research. Many members of the school faculty are carrying on research studies in their fields of special interest. Also, within the graduate ' ' ' f su erior ualit division of the school of dentistry, students are required to complete research projects o p q y. In the UMKC School of Dentistryis vital research program there are outstanding researchers at work on ' ' ' f om Biomedical Sciences and the pressing and relevant dental health problems. Investigations vary in scope r study of cells of oral origin to the effects of selected ingredients in toothpaste and mouthwash in both animals and human beings. Dr. Marvin Field uses an electron microscope provided as a gift to the school to study effects of disease inside the cell. Dr. Elattar approaches the mysteries of the cell at the Biochemical level with his study of steroid activity in normal and pathological gingivae. Dr. Alms, approach is the d f of the cell Dr Brown concentrates his research on discovery of cellular constituents in antibody e ense . . diseased cells. Dr. Liu investigates the effects of hormones on the cellular, tissue, and organ physiological activity. Dr. Porter and Mrs. Flanagan are busy on a project to correlate oral cytology and oral pathology in early cancer detection. Dr. Allen directs oral surgery graduate students in research of implanting the wall of a major blood vessel in bone to promote bone healing. Dr. Flohr and Dr. Gier are independently directing ' ' ' h 1' ' al effects of mouthrinses containing programs sponsored by private enterprise to determine t e cinrc ' d . D . Carlson is directing a project for a major toothpast company for the clinical fluoride compoun s r testing of a dentifrice. This research contract provided for a custom designed, self-propelled mobile van with ownership assigned to the school by the grantor. Dr. Marvin Reed directs research in his field at Mercy ' ' f 1 irri ating device for another major Hospital. Dr. John Meklas has researched the clinical effects o an ora g t entioned are and have contributed to the impressive research program of the company. Many others no m T . D I UMKC School of Dentistry. These projects are funded by Federal, State, Foundation, Societies, and Industrial Sponsors. U.S. Army research contracts have been increased and renewed in the recent past enabling continued research at the school. L7 ? ms ,fn-Q-W U Index-mai-rffr. A K, NNW Qmwq. NOT PICTURED: Brent Martin, Secretary. The Class of 1972 has the distinct honor of being the final class to spend a full year in the Freshman Building at 63rd and Troost Avenue, and further the final class to enjoy the gloomy halls of lOth and Troost Avenue. We willlnot, however, have suffered the dubious pleasure of the chair assignments and the hot summer breezes of the old clinic. We will begin our clinical experience in the new building. The thought of going to the Bookstore, Canteen, or Research Administration offices without crossing streets, dodging autos, panhandlers, and puddles is nearly overwhelming. One may even exercise routinely in the new building by striding briskly through the corriders of the third floor. Throughout our remaining years in school and later in practice, we also, wish to express our appreciation for our new building. The length of study for the one-year program is two full semesters and one summer session and totals 32M credit hours. The length of study for the two-year program is four full semesters and one summer session and totals 46M credit hours. Clinical and classroom teaching and administrative experience will be gained through actual responsibilities in these areas. The majority of the courses in both the one and two-year programs will be taught by the School of Dentistry and School of Education. There is no formal requirement for a biological or educational research-thesis in the one-year program g however, a graduate research paper is required in conjunction with the course, Special Problems in Dental Hygiene. There is a research-thesis requirement for the two-year program which may be satisfied by the presentation and approval of a thesis in the field appropriate to the student's plan of study. Mrs. Frieda Atherton JOAODOHOAO ,E wit The Junior American Dental Hygienists' Association is the student counterpart to the American Dental Hygienists' Association. JADHA was first organized on the UMKC campus. in the fall of 1969. Since JADHA's formation, it's members have conducted service projects and sponsored guest lecturers for the monthly meetings.
